Filipino American History Month

October was chosen to recognize Filipino American History Month to commemorate the arrival of the first Filipinos who landed in what is now Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587. It is also the birth month of Filipino American labor leader Larry Itliong.

Hispanic Heritage Month

From September 15 through October 15, we recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month and the many contributions of those whose ancestors came from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain.

Hurricane Helene Supply Drive

In the spirit of community and compassion, Duke Eye Center in hosting a supply drive to help those affected by Hurricane Helene. Residents in Western NC are still in urgent need of basic supplies and support. Items such as non-perishable food, bottled water, hygiene products, blankets, gloves, and hats are especially needed. Thank you for your generosity and support.

 

Collection Site: AERI Auditorium at main eye center, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays starting today, Tuesday, October 8 through Thursday, Oct. 17.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October


National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) celebrates the contributions and accomplishments that people with disabilities bring to the workforce.

Rosh Hashanah

October 2-4


The Jewish new year, traditionally celebrated with attending synagogue, personal reflection, and eating apples dipped in honey to evoke a sweet new year.

Yom Kippur

October 11-12


 A Jewish day of atonement and repentance for one's personal sins and to many Jews the most important holiday of their faith. Jews traditionally observe Yom Kippur with fasting, attending synagogue, resting, and atonement.

Indigenous People's Day

October 14


A holiday celebrating and honoring the Indigenous people of North America as well as their culture and contributions to society.

Halloween

October 31 


A celebration observed on the eve of the Catholic holiday All Saint's Day, which has also evolved into a secular celebration of the dead, scary stories, costumes, and "trick or treating" for candy.

Diwali

October 31-November 4


 Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, which typically lasts five days and is celebrated during the Hindu lunar month Kartika (between mid-October and mid-November). One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.”
