Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 - October 15
Join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. President Ronald Reagan expanded it in 1988 to cover 30 days beginning September 15 and ending October 15.
This month, we will share Hispanic cultural activities and highlight outstanding people of Hispanic Heritage.

MSCR after-school bike club will be starting soon. Students will learn basic bike fit and handling, safe riding on streets, and route planning. We will meet and ride on Wednesdays starting Wednesday, September 27.
Students will need their own bikes, helmets, and locks. If you do not have a bike and would like to earn one, Wheels for Winners can help. With 15 hours of community service, they will provide a bike, helmet, and lock to students for free! I can help students brainstorm volunteer ideas including helping around school.
To participate, there are permission slips that need to be signed:

Gillespie is pleased to announce that we will soon offer ala carte items for purchase during lunch.
Some of the ala carte items that will be available are:
Water ~ $1.00
Capri Sun ~ $1.50
String cheese ~ $.75
Baked chips ~ $1.00
To keep our lunch lines moving quickly, we ask that you refrain from sending cash with your student and instead use our online service to add money to your student’s lunch account. MMSD uses the service School Café to connect families to MMSD School Nutrition. Creating an account is quick and easy and will offer access to school menus, meal account balances, and payment options.
Directions to get your student’s lunch account set up:
Create your account on School Café. You will need your student's school ID number to create an account.
Please note: the School Cafe still needs to be updated with our name change of Gillespie. You will need to use Jefferson.
You can also send a check to school with your child, and we can add the amount to their lunch account.

Back to school can also mean back to more illness causing germs
How do you know if your student is too sick to be at school?
As a general rule, your student should not go to school if they have:
A fever over 100.4° Fahrenheit (F) or 38° Celsius (C) – Your student can return to school after they’ve been fever-free for 24 hours without antipyretics. Antipyretics are medicines that treat or prevent fever.
If they are too sick to participate in school work or school activities.
Diarrhea – Having loose poop more often that isn’t caused by a change in diet.
Throwing up – More than 2 times in a 24-hour period.

Important cell phone policy
Before our school year begins, please read our cell phone policy and discuss this with your student. To share some highlights of the policy:
Students must keep their cell phone in their locker or give it to a trusted adult at the beginning of the school day.
Students using their cell phone during the day will be asked to give it to a staff member. Phones will be locked in a secure location until the end of the school day, when the student can pick it up.
If the student does not turn over their cell phone when asked, their parent/guardian will be asked to come to school and pick it up.
Again, please review the policy with your scholar. Help your student understand the importance of keeping their phone in their locker.
