ALMOST SPRING DANCE!
On Friday, May 3rd, we held our second dance of the school year - Almost Spring Dance! Students enjoyed dancing to DJ tunes, eating cake, and enjoying the night! A Shout-out to our PTO, parent volunteers, and staff for making this evening memorable.

El viernes 3 de mayo celebramos nuestro segundo baile del año escolar: ¡Casi el baile de primavera! ¡Los estudiantes disfrutaron bailando con melodías de DJ, comiendo pastel y disfrutando de la noche! Saturday, May 4th, was the second annual Noble (National Organization of Black Law Enforcement) local spelling bee. Students from middle schools across Madison and Verona competed for the championship. Congratulations to our Gillespie students Milo Lankton and Andromeda Gathman-Brandl (A.J.), who had the honor of competing in this event. We are proud of you!
El sábado 4 de mayo se celebró el segundo concurso de ortografía local anual de Noble (Organización Nacional de Aplicación de la Ley Negra). Estudiantes de escuelas intermedias de Madison y Verona compitieron por el campeonato. Felicitaciones a nuestros estudiantes de Gillespie, Milo Lankton y Andromeda Gathman-Brandl (A.J.), quienes tuvieron el honor de competir en este evento. ¡Estamos orgullosos de ti!

On Friday, May 3, 8th Grader Derr Lewis was honored at the Kiwanis Award luncheon as the 2024 Kiwanis Middle School Award recipient for exemplary citizenship at school and in her community. The Kiwanis Award is given to middle school students on the West Side of Madison. The 8th-grade team nominated Derr for this award due to her exemplary leadership skills in and out of the classroom. Derr attended the luncheon with her mother and 8th-grade Avid Teacher Josh Bascskai.
El viernes 3 de mayo, Derr Lewis, estudiante de octavo grado, fue honrada en el almuerzo del Premio Kiwanis como ganadora del Premio Kiwanis Middle School 2024 por su ciudadanía ejemplar en la escuela y en su comunidad. El Premio Kiwanis se otorga a estudiantes de secundaria del West Side de Madison. El equipo de octavo grado nominó a Derr para este premio debido a sus ejemplares habilidades de liderazgo tanto dentro como fuera del aula. 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony
Thursday, June 6th
8:40 am—8th graders arrive (dressed and ready) as usual and report to their homerooms to discuss expectations for the day. Please bring students on time so they know what is going on!
9:15 - 10:00 am - PTO provides a buffet-style breakfast for 8th graders and immediate family (siblings and guardians only) in Memorial’s beautiful new atrium. Park on the Mineral Point side of Memorial and enter through the “Neighborhood Center.”
10:00 am - promotion ceremony begins in Memorial’s gym (enter through field house doors)
Balloons, noisemakers, signs, and other decor will not be allowed into the gym (there will be a place outside of the gym to store these things during the ceremony)
There will be a cake reception immediately following the ceremony. Students are then welcome to go home with their families to celebrate!
Ceremonia de Promoción de 8vo Grado - Jueves 6 de Junio
8:40 am: los estudiantes de octavo grado llegan (vestidos y listos) como de costumbre y se reportan a sus salones para repasar las expectativas del día. ¡Por favor traiga a los estudiantes a tiempo para que sepan lo que está pasando!
9:15 - 10:00 am - El PTO ofrece un desayuno estilo buffet para los estudiantes de 8º grado y sus familiares directos (solo hermanos y tutores) en el hermoso y nuevo atrio del Memorial. Estacione en el lado de Mineral Point del Memorial y entre por el "Centro Vecinal".
10:00 am - comienza la ceremonia de promoción en el gimnasio del Memorial (ingrese por las puertas de la casa de campo)
No se permitirá el ingreso al gimnasio de globos, matracas, letreros y otras decoraciones (habrá un lugar fuera del gimnasio para guardar estas cosas durante la ceremonia).
Inmediatamente después de la ceremonia habrá una recepción con pastel. Luego, los estudiantes pueden regresar a casa con sus familias para celebrar.

Updated Info From the Health Office
The new CDC guidelines have been accepted by MMSD (thru the medical advisory team) as of 3/12/24. It will affect you in the following ways:
- No required 5 day isolation. Instead, stay home until you are feeling better and have not had fever, vomiting or diarrhea x 24 hours
- When feeling better, take precautions for 5 days to avoid getting others sick such as wearing a well fitting mask, covering coughs and sneezes, and washing hands frequently.
- Our new screener will talk about Respiratory viruses (covid, RSV, and influenza) and not just COVID-19. No Covid testing will be required.

MSCR / AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
MSCR Updates: flag football, track, and ultimate frisbee have started.
Flag football played its first game against Cherokee and did great! Frisbee is run as a club, so all grade levels are welcome. Stay tuned for updates on track meets.
The bike club has officially started. Join Ms. Vena for a relaxing bike ride.
