Ezekiel Gillespie Middle School Weekly Gazette

As we approach the end of the school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the accomplishments we've had this year and express my heartfelt gratitude for your support and partnership.

This year, we saw an increase in both math and literacy as measured by iReady and Achieve 3000. Our students have shown progress in their academic performance, reflecting the hard work of our dedicated teachers and the support from families at home. Not only have we seen school-wide gains in test scores, but we’ve also seen increased engagement in classroom activities and a growing enthusiasm for learning. These achievements are a testament to the strong foundation we are building together for our students’ futures.

One of the highlights of this year has been the formation of several new student clubs during the lunch hour. These clubs have not only provided students with opportunities to explore their interests but also fostered a sense of community and leadership. Their initiative and enthusiasm are truly inspiring and are helping to create a more vibrant and inclusive school culture.

Our successes this year would not have been possible without the incredible support from our families. Whether volunteering at events, participating in parent-teacher conferences, or simply supporting your children, your involvement has made a difference. School-wide events, such as the Fall and Spring Dances, the STEAM Fair, and the Mad City Challenge, were all the more special because of your active participation. Thank you for being such an integral part of our school community.

While we have much to celebrate, we also recognize that there is still much work to be done. Together, as a united school community, we are committed to continuous improvement. Our goal is to become the best middle school in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), and with your ongoing support and collaboration, I am confident we can achieve this.

As we plan for the next school year, I invite you to share any ideas or suggestions you may have to improve our school culture and environment. Your feedback is invaluable, and together, we can make our school an even better place for our students to learn and grow. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts and ideas.

A medida que nos acercamos al final del año escolar, quiero tomarme un momento para reflexionar sobre los logros que hemos tenido este año y expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento por su apoyo y colaboración.

Este año, vimos un aumento en el nivel de aprendizaje tanto en matemáticas como en alfabetización según lo medido por iReady y Achieve 3000. Si bien tenemos mucho que celebrar, también reconocemos que aún queda mucho trabajo por hacer. Juntos, como comunidad escolar unida, estamos comprometidos con la mejora continua. On Tuesday, June 4th, Gillespie will host a Field Day of activities. We would like to invite families to help in two parts of the day.

We will begin the day with an all-school breakfast. If you would like to volunteer to bring in some food for breakfast, sign up on this Sign Up Genius. We are looking for things like bagels, donuts, and granola bars. If you would like to bring in food, we would like it to be here on Monday, so we know what food we have and can set it up on Tuesday! Of course, we will also accept food on Tuesday morning.

THIS IS A CHANGE: We will also have a Grizzlies Go Run/Walk from 11:45 to 1:20. It will be an approximately two-mile run/walk for students and staff. If you would like to be on the sidelines encouraging students, here is the route the students will take! We want to see signs, music, and/or cheering students on. If you are available during that time, we would love to see you there! In addition to the run/walk, we will have a Big Games activity. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

We are so proud of Raul Cervantes Morales for being selected to the Sanchez Scholar program. He will be provided with academic support, summer enrichment programs, internships and pre college workshops. We are so proud of Asiya Abdi for being selected to the Mann Scholar program. This program will provide mentoring and educational tools during high school and beyond. This spring, our orchestra, band, and choir concerts all performed for family and friends at the newly remodeled Vel Phillips Memorial Auditorium. We're so proud of our young musicians and look forward to watching them learn and grow in the years to come. Thank you to Lisa Schrock, Shawn Weber McMahon, and Alec Kretchman for leading our students this year. And a special thanks to Ms. Mcmahon's student teacher, Alec Hanson, for all his help. He's going to be a great teacher!

Esta primavera, nuestros conciertos de orquesta, coro y banda se presentaron para familiares y amigos en el recientemente remodelado auditorio Vel Phillips Memorial. On May 10th, our Black Student Union (BSU) hosted an end-of-the-year cookout. Everyone enjoyed some great food, music, and games. Thanks to Kira Hogan and Max Jones for organizing this event and supporting our young leaders.

Over two beautiful sunny May days, our 7th-grade students experienced the long-standing Gillespie tradition of the Mad-City Challenge! MCC is an exploration of downtown Madison and the UW campus. Students lead the way to the views from the Memorial Union Terrace and the State Capitol and explore the Veterans and UW Geology museums. They complete challenges at a city fire station and throughout Camp Randall. They end the day with a scoop of ice cream at UW's Babcock Hall.

Summer is approaching quickly, and with it come various Chromebook transitions depending on students’ grade levels. See the list below

5th Grade through 7th Grade: Students keep their Chromebooks at home over the summer.

Families may opt to have the Chromebook and charger stored at the school by reaching out to the school. Students will get a Chromebook assigned to them when they return in the fall. It may or may not be the same device they return in the spring.

8th Grade: Chromebooks and chargers will be collected. Students will receive a new Chromebook when they enter 9th grade.

Summer Semester: If a student would typically turn in their device at the end of the year, but they are attending summer semester, they will keep the device through the end of summer semester.

Hot Spots: If your family has a district Wi-Fi hotspot, you should turn it into your child’s school before leaving for summer. If you need to keep it for summer school, it will be active through the end of July and can be turned into the school in the fall to be reactivated.

Students Leaving the District:

If you are not planning to return to MMSD next school year, please let your child’s teacher and the school office know as soon as possible.

If the departing students are unable to return their Chromebook and charger to the schools before the summer break, they may drop off at any summer school site: Chavez, Elvehjem, Gillespie, Hawthorne, Lake View, Lincoln, Olson, Sherman, Southside, Thoreau, Whitehorse, Wright

Or drop off/mail the devices to Tech Services staff at Doyle during the summer break.

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony

Thursday, June 6th

8:40 am—8th graders arrive (dressed and ready) as usual and report to their homerooms to discuss expectations for the day. Please bring students on time so they know what is going on!

9:15 - 10:00 am - PTO provides a buffet-style breakfast for 8th graders and immediate family (siblings and guardians only) in Memorial’s beautiful new atrium. Park on the Mineral Point side of Memorial and enter through the “Neighborhood Center.”

10:00 am - promotion ceremony begins in Memorial’s gym (enter through field house doors)

Balloons, noisemakers, signs, and other decor will not be allowed into the gym (there will be a place outside of the gym to store these things during the ceremony)

There will be a cake reception immediately following the ceremony. Students are then welcome to go home with their families to celebrate!
