In addition to being recognized among families, peers, and teachers; the students who were awarded for Academic Excellence, Excellent Improvement, and Excellent Leadership were also invited to a family Soul Food dinner in their honor on Wednesday, February 28th, 2024. Families, Administrative staff and teachers gathered that evening to celebrate and honor these students for their hard work. This evening was also dedicated to celebrating African American culture, art, and creativity. While enjoying a delicious meal catered by Melly Mell's and Pickn' Save, families also enjoyed a Hip-Hop dance presentation by the Grizzly Girls, Proud words from their Principal; Ms. Melanie Theil, and vibed to some R&B instrumentals as they mingled and enjoyed each other in community!
We are all truly proud of all our students, and we can't wait to see what next year holds for them!

Dear Gillespie Families,
The AVID Application window for the 2024-25 school year is officially open to current Gillespie 6th and 7th graders! AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is an elective class aimed at preparing students for excellence in high school, college, and beyond. AVID scholars are selected to participate based on academic potential, positive behavior, and strong attendance. AVID provides the support needed to help your child become ready for high school, college, and beyond. Look at this brochure for more information about the AVID Program.
Would your child benefit from being in the AVID class?
While everyone benefits from the strategies that AVID has to offer, there are some students who benefit more. Check out this AVID student profile! If your child meets some or all of the criteria in the left column, AVID might be a good option for them. If you are still unsure, feel free to reach out to Mrs. Alexander.
Why should you consider AVID?
100% of high school seniors who take the AVID Elective Class graduate from high school
In MMSD at the end of 8th grade, AVID students have a higher cumulative GPA and fewer unexcused absences compared to the comparison group.
Students in the AVID Elective have higher GPAs, better attendance, and better test scores than their peers.
Research by UW-Madison shows students in the AVID Elective class are more likely to graduate from high school, enroll in a 4-year college, and be successful in college.
Students who are interested in AVID need to complete the online application, write a 100-word essay, and participate in an interview. If you need additional time, please reach out to Mrs. Alexander!
Two Options to Apply:
Students can join the Gillespie AVID Google Classroom using this code: uvcww46. In the Google Classroom, there is more information about AVID, as well as the Google Form Application
After completing the application you will receive an email from Mrs. Alexander letting you know that your application was received. Interviews will happen during the week of April 8th. Mrs. Alexander will hand out passes for students.
If you would like more information about the AVID program, please, consider attending the AVID Parent information session on Wednesday, March 13th from 5:30-6:30 pm in the Gillespie Lecture Hall (see insert). If you can’t attend this meeting and have any questions, please contact Gillespie’s AVID Coordinator, Nicole Alexander naalexander@madison.k12.wi.us.

Please Consider Donating a Small Gift Card
Coming up, Gillespie will have two celebration weeks, “Lift Every Voice & Read Week” in March and “College & Career Week” in April. During these weeks, students will participate in activities where they will be able to win small gift cards. If you would like to donate a gift card for prizes, we would appreciate gift cards valued at $5 or $10 to Target or Walmart. Send any donated gift cards to school with your scholar labeled for Mrs. Alexander. Thank you so much for your support!

From the Health Office
COVID Information
If your student tests positive for Covid, please fill out the MMSD Student Screener (it is through IC so you will need your parent login. The school health office is unable to fill out the screener for you unfortunately). A contact tracer with the district will reach out and let you know next steps, like when the student can return to school. If you need masks or tests, we have them to give out at school. Just come to the office and we can have them ready for you.

MSCR / AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM UPDATES
Basketball games have officially started. We have a 2-1 record so far. Congratulations, Grizzlies, and keep up the excellent work! Parents need to accompany students who want to show support and come to the games.
GSA is up and running during lunchtime. It's still okay for students to start a club.
