We played Memorial Day last Thursday night. The boys got off to a fast start in the first half and battled hard in the second half with great heart and determination. Xavier Preston led all scorers with 25 points. I thought we did some good things. We struggled scoring in the second half, but that had a lot to do with their defensive pressure. They are a good team; however, we played hard and never quit. We won 61-45.

On Thursday night we played Memorial Day out of Savannah. The girls started off with a great man-to-man defense holding Memorial to two points in the first quarter. We had a sloppy second quarter but bounced back. The girls did a great job fighting the pressure that Memorial brought. We got the ball up the court and got some easy layups. Sophie Price was the leading scorer with 10 points and Margaret Spiers followed with 8. The final score was 44-20.

Last week, FA faced St. Francis and Needwood. FA dominated the pitch against St. Francis winning 6-0. Our most recent game against Needwood was a nail-biter. At halftime, the score was 0-0. There were numerous opportunities for the boys to score as the ball passed twice in front of the goal and hit the crossbar. However, Needwood's relentless drive down the field resulted in a loss of 0-2. The boys played with heart. I could not have been prouder of their play on the field and their sportsmanship before and after the game.

I would like to specifically acknowledge three players who were commended for their character and sportsmanship: Gavin Grantham, David Beimler, and Jacob Gordon. All three of these young men were highlighted by the referees and opposing coach. Team sports are more than winning a game. Team sports develop and facilitate personal growth. Outstanding job, fellas.

Keep up the good work.

FA vs. Needwood
November 17, 2021

The Knights traveled to Needwood for a game on November 17. Nyah Forrester was the team captain for her final game with the Knights. Nyah has saved many breakaways and stopped many scoring drives in her time with the Knights. During this game, Nyah did not disappoint. During the final minute of the game, Nyah stopped a scoring drive, once again, to keep the Needwood girls from scoring. Nyah will truly be missed by all who know her.

During the first half, the Needwood goalkeeper was very busy. Accompanied by several strong mid-field passes, the Knights took over 15 shots on goal, which included attempts by Scout Brummett (7), Libby Certain (12), and Mary Ford Fitzjurls (5). The defense was strong again this week and caused the Needwood team to have little opportunity to score. The Knights scored twice on two free kicks putting the ball in the net just over the goalkeeper’s head. Thank you, Mary Ford! The first half ended 2-0.

The second half continued to see the Knights keep the opposing goalkeeper busy. Catherine Dunn (16) had multiple attempts at scoring, as did Scout. Needwood’s goalie was very tough to score on. With about eight minutes remaining in the game, Mary Ford sent in a corner kick that went in the net courtesy of Libby Certain. Others had an opportunity to score as well, including Sofia Gegg (3) and Mary Ford. Goalkeeper Clare Reid stopped a nice shot on goal by Needwood with about a minute remaining to hold them scoreless. All the defenders, Nyah, Kate, Lucy, and Lauren, really kept a strong defensive line throughout the game and made great kicks over the Needwood midfielders. The game ended 3-0. Knights win!

Go Knights!
