A Message from the Board of Trustees
|
Dear Frederica Family,
The Head of School position was highlighted in the
Southern Teachers Agency weekly job posting email on Friday. Job seekers from around the country, as well as those who post jobs with Southern Teachers, will see this posting. Click
HERE to read the posting. The position profile will also be posted on
NAIS,
SAIS and
GISA websites which reach across all of the professional organizations affiliated with a quality independent school leader and educator.
Greer Brown, Search Committee Chair, and I join with the other members of the Search Committee in expressing our appreciation to everyone who participated in the Listening Sessions with a special thank you to Valerie Hepburn, our facilitator, for sharing her time and talent once more for the benefit of Frederica Academy. This job description reflects that valuable input. In addition to helping promote the position externally, it will also help guide the Search Committee in what our community is looking for in our next leader.
This is an exciting time for Frederica Academy as we look forward to meeting candidates and bringing the finalists on campus. As a reminder, you will have the opportunity to meet the finalists. Please look for updates in future Sunday emails about these opportunities. We anticipate this taking place sometime in December before school adjourns for the Christmas holiday, so please stay tuned.
We also ask that you refer any possible candidates that you or your friends, family and colleagues may be aware of to Greer. If you know of an outstanding leader that you believe could be a good fit for our school, please let Greer know at your earliest convenience.
I have enjoyed my conversations with many in the Frederica family and look forward to many more. It is Annual Fund season, and I ask you to consider making a gift early this year so that we can demonstrate the great support our school receives each year from our wonderful parents. You will soon receive information about this year's Annual Fund campaign.
I remain grateful to and in awe of Ellen Fleming for her outstanding leadership and commitment to our school.
Sincerely,
Frederica Academy Board of Trustees Chair

FA October Testing Information
|
FA families who live on the north end of Saint Simons Island should anticipate experiencing a longer commute to school this week. On Saturday,
The Brunswick News reported the following: "Frederica Road on St. Simons will be reduced to one lane next week while Georgia Power works on a major utility pole along the road. Georgia Power trucks will be working on the pole from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. between Sylvan Drive and Market Street from Monday through Friday, according to a county news release. A portion of the south-bound lane on Frederica in front of Taylor House Interiors will be closed. Traffic will be rerouted to the center turn lane to accommodate a Georgia Power truck. People seeking more information can call 912-554-7111.
It is very important that all students in Grades 2-7 arrive on time so that they will be in attendance when ERB testing begins.
|
As a college preparatory, independent school, Frederica Academy is not mandated to administer specific state or federal standardized tests; therefore, we do not teach to a particular test.
We employ a comprehensive approach to assessing each student's educational journey and focus on tests which allow us to better understand every student as a learner as well as how our students compare to students at other independent schools. In Grades 8-11, we administer tests which help us better prepare our students for the SAT and ACT.
October is a very important testing month at Frederica Academy.
Please note that no homework will be assigned during testing.
While there is no direct preparation for these types of tests, Frederica Academy recommends the following:
-
Have your child present at school on the days of testing;
-
Encourage a relaxed evening prior to testing, along with a good night's rest, and a normal, balanced
breakfast; and, finally,
-
Arrive at school on time and unhurried - which is a great start to any day!

National Merit Scholarship Commended Student
|
Constance Sullivan, a member of the Class of 2018, has been named a Commended Student as part of the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP).
Commended Students are recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the PSAT, the qualifying test used for program entry.
Over 1.6 million students took the PSAT last October. Constance is one of 34,000 students nationwide who took the test and earned this distinction.
"The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for the NMSP. "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

|
Middle School Computer Science Class
|
The Middle School Computer Science class wrapped up the Nine Weeks period with a 3D design project where students were challenged to design a keychain that represents something about Frederica Academy. They used a CAD program to design in 3D, and then the keychains were printed with our 3D printer. Everyone did an excellent job showing their creativity and skills.
|
Fifth Grade Grammar Surgery
|
Last Monday, Fifth Grade students were surprised to discover they would be performing surgery. Grammar surgery required students to use skills learned in previous weeks, to save their paper patients. The students were required to cut out specific parts of speech and then glue them to their distressed patients. Once all patients' lives were safe, the Fifth Graders were required to put their grammar skills to the test through a computer game called
Extreme Sentence Surgeons.

On Friday, third graders presented their book reports during class. Students were able to design a poster, decorate a book jacket or dress as a character from the book. They had a great time learning from one another.

Second Grade Math Challenges
|
Second Graders enjoyed stretching their visual thinking by using the Q-bitz puzzles during math last week. Wells Dixon challenged himself by working on multiple puzzles at one time.
|
Second Grade Celebrity Reader
|
Second graders were treated to a VERY special guest reader last week. Sophie McGlaughlin, STAR student in Mrs. Schneider's class, invited Mrs. Floyd to read to the class (her last group of first graders before retiring this summer). The secret couldn't be kept, but everyone was thrilled to spend time with a special teacher and friend!
|
Pre-K Welcomes Third Grade Mentors
|
Third grade students, Kyler and Nora, earned a "Help Pre-K Pass" in math class for collecting 25 tickets for their great math efforts and behavior. Mrs. Jobe invited the girls to the Pre-K lunch time to help assist students as needed, as well as to model nice lunch table manners.
The girls enjoyed their time with the Pre-K students, and Pre-K loved having them in their class too! That's what we call a WIN-WIN!
|
Pre-Kindergarten Mystery Reader
|
Last week's Pre-K Mystery Reader was Mr. Taylor Childers, husband of PK teacher Allie Childers. He read the very super silly book
How To Dress A Dragon
which the children loved!
