Head of School Message
Dear FA Families,

Registration for Frederica Academy's Summer Programs 2022 begins today.

Please find included in this email a link for this year's Camper Handbook, which includes a catalog of the activities being offered this upcoming summer. There is also a link that can be used for online registration.
Our Summer Programs, under the direction and vision of one of our Third Grade teachers, Heather Day, has grown and developed in recent years and is now a signature program at the school of which we are very proud. New activities and classes are added to the menu of activities and existing offerings are revisited and strengthened each year.
Summer Programs is of significant import to the school and was an identified and prioritized initiative in the Strategic Plan we introduced in 2020 for at least these six reasons:
  • It allows FA students to spend time on the campus with adults and young adults other than their classroom teachers doing activities that are engaging and fun yet are not normally part of the traditional liberal arts school-year offerings.

  • It allows non-FA students to work and play on the campus and have use of our facilities and interact with some of our personnel. In this respect, Summer Programs is a chance to introduce the FA brand to the larger community, share our resources, and possibly meet and recruit students who would benefit from and contribute to our school.
·
  • It allows us to pilot programs and meet new adult leaders and determine whether there is a place or interest for any of these activities or adult leaders in our traditional school-year programs.

  • It serves as an introduction for new families and children planning on beginning FA for the first time during the upcoming school year.
·
  • It provides jobs in the summer for some of our teachers, coaches, administrators, and interested high school students.
·
  • It generates a stream of revenue that augments our operational budget.

I am excited about what Heather Day and her staff have planned for this year and am eager to host campers on the campus throughout the summer. I would invite anyone with Summer program age-children to peruse the offerings in the catalog. I would also encourage you to email Mrs. Day with any specific questions regarding Summer Programs by using the link below.

Respectfully,

Scott L. Hutchinson

Parent Association Updates
Parents, please check your email for our Parent Association newsletter to read about the No Gift Too Small Challenge! We would love 100% FA family participation. Donate here, then RSVP, and join us for the Annual Fund Oyster Roast as a thank you to all parent, faculty, and trustee donors.

We have several volunteer opportunities. Please sign up below!

Open House Poster Distribution - Help the Admission Office by distributing promotional event posters around the island and Brunswick in advance of our Open House week and admissions season. Please sign up to hang a few posters and share the Open House invite with our greater community. Poster pick-up is January 20 in the Admission Office. Sign up here.

Open House Volunteers - Open House week requires many hands working together to ensure that sessions are prepared, guests are greeted, and that Frederica rolls out the green carpet. Parents interested in supporting the Admission Office during Open House Week (February 7-11) should sign up here.

Parent Association Board and Committees - We still have committees with spring events that need parent volunteers. We are also beginning to look for leadership and committee members for the coming year. Please see our volunteer form for areas where you can get involved, and let us know how you want to make an impact on the FA community! Sign up here.

Derby Day - The Derby Day chairs are looking for fresh and familiar faces to build their Silent Auction Committee! This is FA's signature fundraising event and is a fun way to meet other parents, engage with the community, and support the school. For more information and to volunteer, please email co-chair, Katie Widener.

THIS WEEKEND
Chromebook Charging
With the long holiday weekend upon us, please remember Chromebooks need to be plugged in at least once or twice a week. A full charge literally takes less than an hour. Inevitably upon returning from a long weekend or holiday, we are inundated with dead Chromebooks in the classroom. This is a huge disruption in the classroom and it usually depletes the school's Chromebook loaner cart. Loaners are available for students to use when their Chromebooks are being repaired. Thank you in advance for helping reinforce this at home.

THIS WEEK
Middle School Golf Sign-Up
Students who are interested in playing on the Middle School Golf Team this year and didn't play on the team last year should contact Coach Tom Willis. The season will start in mid-February.
WEDNESDAY
FA Recycled Uniform Sale
Parents, we know uniforms and fleeces are in high demand. However, our parent volunteers work hard to collect, wash, and organize donated uniforms and then sell them at a low cost as a fundraiser to support Parent Association initiatives. Uniforms are available for purchase only and cannot be temporary loaned to students.

If you are in need of something outside of a uniform sale, please just ask! We can meet you at school or you can stop by the front office and pick up a purchase form.
FRIDAY
SSI Rotary Speech Contest
Upper School students interested in participating in this year's Rotary Speech Contest should click HERE to sign up.

A school competition will be held on campus during Upper School Lunch on Friday, January 21, to determine who will represent FA at the Glynn County contest.

APRIL 27
PPE Night (Grades 4-11)
All rising 5th through 12th grade students need to have a Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation (PPE) for each new school year. This is required due to the rigorous activity expected by our physical education, athletic, and field trip programs.

As a school service, the FA Athletic Department and Southeast Georgia Health System conduct on-campus PPE's for current students in grades 4 through 11 during the month of April each year. Once completed, each student will be covered to participate in physical education classes and all athletics for the entire upcoming school year. We are very fortunate to have community volunteers provide this service for a $10 donation to the FA Booster Club, which will be charged to your school account.

This year's PPE Night will be on Wednesday, April 27.

Completed forms should be submitted to Adam Norman.
APRIL 30

Eighth Grade Valley Forge Simulation
Since returning from Christmas break, Eighth Grade students have focused on the Revolutionary War in Mrs. Smith's class. Students have learned about the Battle of Long Island, the Battle of Trenton, the Culper Spy Ring, as well as economic warfare inflicted by the British regarding Continental currency. Students also learned about the first plot to attack George Washington. Last Thursday, students participated in a Valley Forge simulation learning about the important role of Frederich Wilhelm von Steuben, Washington's vaccination program against smallpox, the building of the cabins, and the type of food they ate.
Third Grade Skittles Graphing
This week, Third Grade students began their graphing unit. To enhance their understanding of bar graphs, students worked together in groups to collect data and create a bar graph on the different Skittle colors. They took their project a step deeper when they analyzed and interpreted the data from their graphs.
