Dear FA Families,
It seems like academic, athletic, and arts achievements often capture the headlines in schools these days; and in part, that is true at FA as well. When we advertise that we develop the whole child, though, we accept the responsibility for creating programs and relationships that help develop character and service to others.
This morning, I am proudly sharing with you that our ninety-two Upper School Health and Wellness Club members, led by seniors Cammie Pope and Thomas Veal and faculty sponsors Nikki Pope and Jimmy Riggs, have been actively participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life movement the past several months.
Relay for Life celebrates survivorship and honors those who have lost their lives to cancer. The monies raised via the various fundraising activities support research financed by the American Cancer Society. Gabby Vacheron, a tenth grader, approached the Club about having a relay team, and after some discussion within the Club, members realized that almost all of them had family members or close friends who had been or are presently battling cancer. The Club was all in. In January, they formed a team and have been competing in fundraising activities with nineteen other Glynn County teams ever since.
They initially set a goal of raising $1,000 but have reset and surpassed three new goals since then. They finally settled on a $5,000 target and exceeded that number last week. Click here to access the FA Relay Team Page, where you can see the latest total (or make a donation, if inclined).
The Club’s fundraising efforts alone merits attention in this letter, but I am also writing to herald the upcoming culminating Glynn County Relay for Life event this Friday night from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Golden Isles Church of God. Our team will be there, and we are honored and proud to be participating in this community event. We invite you to stop by and cheer on our relay walkers. Our Club has purchased a rose bush for Maria Gallagher, one of our much beloved Upper School teachers, in memory of her mother, and luminaries for others in our community who have been or are currently fighting cancer. Our team will have members circling the track during that six-hour period.
Strong character is not built in an afternoon nor is service to others incorporated into one’s life necessarily with participation in one event or incident. That attribute and that mindset are nurtured and strengthened over time through years of immersion in a culture that prizes them. Expect FA to provide that culture and reinforce those characteristics.
Respectfully,
Scott L. Hutchinson
Head of School

APRIL 27
PPE Night (Grades 4-11)
|
|
All students in Grade 5-12 need to have a Pre-participation Physical Evaluation (PPE) each school year. This is required due to the rigorous activity expected by our physical education, athletic, and field trip programs.
As a school service, the FA Athletic Department and Southeast Georgia Health System will conduct an on-campus PPE night for current students in Grades 4 through 11 on Wednesday, April 27, for the 2022-2023 school year. Once complete, each student will be covered to participate in school and sports for the entire school year.
We are very fortunate to have community volunteers provide this service for a $10 donation to the FA Booster Club.

Well Done, Eliana McMahon!
|
|
While most of us were traveling last week for enjoyment and relaxation, one FA Health and Wellness Club member spent her spring break on a medical mission.
Freshman Eliana McMahon traveled to the country of Ghana, along with several local physicians. Ghana is a country in the western part of Africa. While there, Eliana helped in the clinic with malaria screenings, organizing medications, and wrapping wounds. She also visited a local school where she saw the children in their school setting. We are very proud of Eliana and her service!

Sixth Grade Musical Mentor
|
|
Last Monday, Christine Lamprea, cello soloist for the Coastal Symphony of Georgia, visited the Sixth Grade class and String ensemble. Ms. Lamprea's visit was made possible by the Coastal Symphony of Georgia's 'Musical Mentors' program. In the workshop, Ms. Lamprea demonstrated various cello techniques, took requests of songs to play, and spoke about learning to love music at an early age. She told the story of how she started playing cello in fourth grade, made her way to Julliard and the New England Conservatory, and continued to be inspired by the great cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Overall, it was an inspiring visit by a very talented performing artist.

As an introduction to the discussion of immigration through Ellis Island, Third Grade students examined various artifacts that immigrants may have brought on their voyage. Third Grade will continue to examine the many reasons for immigration and challenges that immigrants face as they make a home in a new country.
