Dear FA Families,

We are pleased to write this week's featured Sunday e-newsletter message as a way to officially kick off FA Derby Week 2022!

Derby festivities start TODAY with the launch of this year’s online silent auction. Click here to access the auction site. A credit card will be required in order to place a bid. Winning bidders will pay for purchases through the auction website with the credit card on file once the auction ends on Sunday, May 8, at 8:00 p.m. Please email Brad Hutcherson if you have any difficulty registering or bidding on items. If you would like to share auction information with a friend, please use the following link: https://FADerby.givesmart.com. Once signing up, please do not share the link that was emailed or texted to you from GiveSmart because it is tied to your personal account and credit card information.

Throughout the week, volunteers will be stationed in the carlines encouraging FA parents to access the online auction and to purchase Derby Day Raffle Tickets. The winning raffle ticket will be drawn on Saturday, May 7, before the running of the Kentucky Derby Race. You do not need to be present to win. This year’s raffle item is a fabulous cruise aboard the Sea Island Explorer (valued at $15,000) donated by Sea Island. Click here for more information about the raffle and to purchase tickets online.

We are excited to co-chair Derby Day this year and are grateful to all of the event’s sponsors, volunteers, and auction contributors for their generosity and support. More than 100 sponsors have elected to participate this year, totaling more than $100,000! We look forward to thanking our sponsors in person at the 20th Annual FA Derby Day on Saturday.

Since its inception, Frederica Academy has raised more than $2.7 million in Derby Day revenue to help fulfill its mission to maximize the potential of its students in mind, body, and spirit. Although the race only lasts two minutes each year, the event truly impacts a lifetime of learning as a result of the generosity and dedication of those who support it. We are close to this year’s finish line and hope you will consider being a part of the race by purchasing raffle tickets, bidding online, or joining us on Saturday at the Sea Island Retreat Clubhouse.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all of the grandparents and special friends who attended Grandparents Day and May Day on Friday! We are also grateful to all of the donors and volunteers who made the event possible.
Congratulations to Sophia Holloway for being crowned this year's FA May Queen. Sophia is the daughter of Dawn Holloway and Trevor Holloway. She was escorted by Evan Moitoso.
Sophia was crowned May Queen by FA legend Melanie Howell '88, who was honored earlier in the ceremony by Emerson Pickens, Middle School Student Council Secretary, for her lifetime achievements to Frederica Academy. Mrs. Howell will retire after this year to spend more time with her grandchildren.

FA Silver Pen Winners
The Silver Pen Writing Competition started as a way to bridge the communication gap between high school seniors and members of select retirement communities. Marsh's Edge sponsors the competition in Glynn County, and it is open to all seniors in the area.

The topic of the essay this year was how global warming has affected the student's generation and what solutions the student would like to see implemented to alleviate the impact in the future. Students were encouraged to include ways to personally take part in changing habits that affect our environment negatively.

Frederica Academy had two students' essays selected in the top three finalists. Cammie Pope won first place and Kate Walbridge won second place. A student from Glynn Academy won third place. Kate and Cammie attended an awards luncheon at Marsh's Edge last week where they read their essays and received their awards.

Congratulations to Cammie and Kate for this prestigious achievement!
FA Seniors Win Washington Trip
Roy Boyd and Cole Lawrence, both seniors, were recently awarded an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for a weeklong seminar next summer. They won the Colonial Dames Essay Contest based on the topic, “Choose one of the five freedoms in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and discuss why it should or should not be changed in today’s high-tech global society.” Roy and Cole are following in the footsteps of Sara Seckinger '19, Ryan McHugh '19, and Constance Sullivan '18, Spencer Sullivan '22, Carter Jules '22 and Parker Schoenauer '22 for earning this distinguished honor.

Now in its 40th year, the national essay contest sponsored by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America generously provides scholarships for students from across the United States to attend the Washington Workshops Congressional Seminar in Washington, D.C.

These students will have the opportunity to meet US Senators and Representatives, attend committee hearings, listen to guest speakers on the branches of government, work in model committees with other delegates, and enjoy Washington’s top historical and educational exhibits. The National Society of Colonial Dames, corporate societies, endowments, and individual Dame members contribute funds, approximately $1,600 per winner for the project and trip.
Congrats, Parker Schoenauer!
Parker Schoenauer was honored as the April Rotary Student of the Month last week at the Brunswick Country Club. She invited Mrs. Boatright to join her as her teacher guest. Parker is the daughter of Paige and Pete Schoenauer. Her father also attended the luncheon.
FA Campus Blood Drive
The FA Health and Wellness Club held its second Red Cross Blood Drive of the year on Saturday, April 30. Spring is a busy time of year, and hosting a blood drive on a Saturday can be tricky. We set our goal at 31 units. We are happy to report that we ended the day with 43 units of blood! Donations and blood supply are both at an all-time low. However, the need for blood never decreases. We thank everyone who came out and donated! We had many first-time donations and that is always special. Being involved in a project that saves lives is an amazing feeling.

Romanian Guest Lecturer
Matei Branistareanu, a native of Romania, visited Steve Jobe's history classes last week and shared his experiences working with the Ukrainian refugees coming across the northern border of Romania. He was able to share about the detailed logistics of processing 600,000 refugees and paint a very real picture of what these displaced Ukrainian citizens are facing. The students were very engaged and had excellent questions for Mr. Branistareanu.
MS Powderpuff Football
While the May Day Ceremony on the Sea Island Green was filled with grace and rhythmic pageantry, the Middle School Powderpuff Football game, which followed it, was a showcase for grit and athleticism. Congratulations to the Middle School Student Council for organizing and hosting this inaugural May Day event.
Second Grade Beach Lesson
Second Grade students spent the day at the beach last Tuesday with Miss Brooke and Miss Madeline from Coastal Outdoor Adventures. The children created beach habitats in the sand and then filled them with creatures they gathered by sifting, casting, and seining.
