Dear FA Families,
I am honored to write to my FAmily this morning... honored to have been asked and to be given the public opportunity to wish my grandmother and all FA grandparents a Happy Grandparents Day.
My name is Maddie Baldwin, and I am a junior at Frederica Academy. I spend most of my days engrossed in my schoolwork and most of my downtime playing volleyball, basketball, attending club meetings, and spending time with my family and friends.
My grandmother has made a lasting impact on my life. While we may not always agree on everything, we cheer each other on and are always there for each other. My grandmother may look familiar to many of you, perhaps more familiar than me. You see, she is relied upon to be present at almost all of the FA athletic games on campus; she can always be found cheering and supporting our FA student-athletes while serving as a gate volunteer at our football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and baseball games throughout the year. My grandmother is Ms. Paula Baker.
While I share a special bond with my grandmother, I know many of you do too. Grandparents, and those we think of as grandparents, help us connect our past to our present, while playing an integral role in our future. They shape our thoughts and feelings and provide a perspective on life not readily seen or heard in today’s modern world. I know that my grandmother is only one of hundreds of FA grandparents who make our school community so special.
Today, I would like to wish my grandmother and all of our FA grandparents a Happy Grandparents Day. I think I can speak for my FAmily when I say that we appreciate all that you have done to shape our lives.
Gratefully,
Maddie Baldwin

A Message from the School Counselor
September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Frederica Academy is joining the hundreds of thousands people in our nation to increase awareness of suicide and educate ourselves on what we can do to help this growing problem. We will be providing age-appropriate information during Middle School and Upper School advisory meetings. In addition, the Upper School Health and Wellness Club will host Worry Free Wednesday on September 21 during Upper School lunch, when we will participate in activities to help raise awareness and support!
With increasing diagnoses of emotional and behavioral disorders—from anxiety and depression to eating disorders, self-harm, and suicidal ideation—we are facing a mental health crisis among adolescents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death among ages 15-25.
We also know that suicide can be prevented. A recent study found that four out of five individuals considering suicide give some sign of their intentions, either verbally or behaviorally. Here are some of the warning signs indicating that a teen is considering suicide:
- Talking or posting on social media about suicide or wanting to die
- Feeling hopeless or trapped
- Increasing use of drugs and/or alcohol
- Changes in weight, appearance, or sleep habits
- Isolating themselves and withdrawing from friends
- Visiting or calling people to say goodbye, and giving away prized possessions
It is important to know that talking about suicide does not increase the risk of suicide. As a matter of fact, research shows that it actually helps decrease the risk. Discussing our feelings and thoughts openly with a safe, caring, and trustworthy person is one of the most helpful things you can do. Reach out to me or another trusted adult if you or someone you know is struggling. You can also call the new National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988. This will connect you with a trained, caring professional who will help you.
Again, please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. I am here for you!

Sixth Grade Earth Science
To wrap up Ms. Walker's Sixth Grade Earth Science's weathering and erosion unit, students performed different experiments to identify, observe, and record the effects of erosion and weathering on a coastal landscape and different types of rocks. Students simulated a beach area being affected by wind and water erosion, tested how "acid rain" (vinegar) and water could affect copper statues using pennies, and how both limestone and carbonate rocks react with water and "acid rain". The students really rocked this lesson!
