Head of School Message

Dear FA Families,

Sign-ups for the October 21 Parent-Teacher Conferences are upon us (click here to sign up and to see more details), and the conferences themselves are the subject of this Sunday’s email. School will not be in session on October 21 for students, but childcare will be available for Lower School children while their parents attend their conferences.

Any occurrence that interrupts our daily routine for most of us is an inconvenient nuisance. However, some inconveniences are worth making allowances for… and Parent-Teacher conferences certainly fall into that category. The gist of this email is to encourage all parents, regardless of the ages of your children, to make the effort and take the time to attend your child’s parent conference.

There are at least two compelling arguments as to why participating in the conferences is so important. First, anecdotal perspective and additional data that may not be available in the report card format provides important insight for a parent. If your child is young enough that you are still looking for ways to be a partner in helping them through school, hearing from the classroom teacher might provide just the optimal advocacy tips that you are seeking. If your child is at the age where they share very little about their respective school days, much less specific schoolwork, being able to engage in a conversation with someone “in the know” who will cheerfully provide more than one-word responses might be refreshing. Regardless of a child’s age, it can be a complicated combination of factors as to why a student succeeds at some things in school and is challenged by others. Insight from the teacher on those factors like classroom dynamics, the ability to collaborate with like-minded or different-thinking classmates, the perseverance to work through difficult problems, and the general friend groups and social interactions outside the classroom might be helpful.

The second reason to attend a parent conference is to have individual, direct interaction with the adults in your children’s lives with whom they spend most of their daylight hours for a majority of the year. When your children are young, their teachers are most likely the most influential people in their lives, excepting family members. Experiencing firsthand those influential adults seems like a good use of time once or twice a year. Even as your children grow through Middle and Upper School, the impact of teachers on students’ lives and student perspectives can be considerable. Getting to know these teachers a bit more can only be to your benefit. After all, each of these adults spends a portion of 170 days with your children each year.

Respectfully,

Scott L. Hutchinson
