Head of School Message

“Live as if you would die tomorrow. Learn as if you will live forever.”

- Mahatma Gandhi

Dear Frederica Families,

Every day, in fact almost every hour of every day, I am reminded that the core, twofold business of school for every child… regardless of one’s age… is to learn as much as possible… as much as possible both about the world outside themselves and the world within themselves. That sounds, first-blush, like a daunting task to be captured in one sentence, or even one Sunday email; that, I suppose, is why the exercise of acquiring and harnessing knowledge is worthy of a lifetime quest.

My point in writing this Sunday message this morning is simply to encourage every student (and indirectly every parent on behalf of their children) to be willing and open to learning at every opportunity in school and in life. That is the critical, salient step…to get out of the car each and every morning with a voracious appetite for learning. That mindset of readiness is the key differentiator in smart, curious, focused adults who see acquiring information and insight into their own lives and the world with which they interact as among the highest of priorities. Whether you are a first or second grader learning how and why various letters combine to make sounds and printed words and those combinations have meaning in written and spoken language or you are a high school student-athlete on the brink of being on the losing end of an early season football contest and you stay the course by learning from your mistakes each second-half series of downs, then apply hard work, perseverance and creativity and snatch out a last-second victory, being ready to learn at every opportunity better ensures a fulfilling end.

The school year is young; we are not even to Labor Day until tomorrow. I am not particularly a betting man, but I would confidently wager a small sum that those students who come to school each morning ready to learn at each opportunity throughout the day will experience a more satisfying and growth-oriented year than those who don’t. And a long-term goal I think we all have for both FA students and for alumni in this matter is that our school becomes known across the region as an educational institution filled with students who are universally hungry to learn.

Respectfully,

Scott L. Hutchinson

School-Wide Homecoming T-Shirt

This year, the Upper School Student Council reached out to a couple of Upper School students to see if they would be interested in designing this year's commemorative homecoming t-shirt. Alston Euart and Mildred Reeves took the task and ran with it! Dr. Nevins and Mr. Riggs gave them a blank sheet of paper and said, "We want to see what you can do! Be creative!"  The shirt design below is what Alston and Mildred worked on and created. We could not be more proud of their work, and we are happy to share with everyone what the 2022 Homecoming Shirt looks like! Thank you, Alston and Mildred, for your help and hard work!

The theme for the Homecoming Game is "Blackout," and we hope that everyone (students, parents, and staff) purchases a shirt and wears it out to the game.  Shirts will go on sale next week!

FACTS App Update

Recently, FA’s FACTS App has been experiencing issues when toggling between students/siblings within the app. Frederica alerted FACTS to this issue and it has now been resolved. If you have automatic updates configured on your iPhone, your app will update automatically. Otherwise, parents can go to the Apple App store and manually update the app.

If you do not already have the FA FACTS app, you may download for free on in the app store. Simply search “Frederica Academy.” The FA FACTS app provides parents with access to Middle and Upper School student schedules, homework, grades and more.

Chromebook Reminder

With the long holiday weekend upon us, please remember to reinforce that your child's Chromebook needs to be plugged in at least once or twice a week. A full charge literally takes less than an hour. Inevitably, upon returning from a long weekend or holiday, we are inundated with dead Chromebooks in the classroom. This is a huge disruption in the classroom, and it usually depletes our Chromebook loaner cart. These loaners are available for students to use when their Chromebooks are being repaired. Thank you in advance for your helping us to reinforce this at home.

Senior College Night

Frederica Academy's annual flu vaccine clinic will take place on Thursday, October 13 between noon and 3:00 p.m. in the Gym. This clinic is open to all FA staff, students, and family members. The flu vaccine forms should be turned in to Nurse Pope by October 6th. Please call Nurse Pope with any questions.

Don Scott Day

On Thursday, September 1, we celebrated Don Scott Day across the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools. Mr. Don is retiring after eighteen years of service in the Facilities Department at Frederica Academy. He has been a beloved member of our team, always willing to help with any task, small or large. We appreciate all of Mr. Don's hard work over the years and wish him a very happy retirement.

STEM Club

The first STEM Club meeting was held this past Monday. The students used pool noodles, marbles, and masking tape to construct a track they could roll the marbles down, simulating a roller coaster. They could include loops and hills, and some interesting designs were developed. Creative ideas flowed and everyone had fun!

Middle School FRED FACTS

Third Grade "Starbooks Cafe"

Third Grade students enjoyed a visit at the "Starbooks Cafe" where they sampled several different texts that we will be reading throughout Module 1 of Wit and Wisdom. As students took "book bites" they also enjoyed ocean-themed snacks and drinks while listening to their friends share about the texts they are most interested in exploring together.

First Grade STEM Challenge

After reading the Duckling Gets a Cookie!?, by Mo Willems, our First Grade STEM Challenge was to build the tallest tower that could support a cookie using just one piece of paper and a foot of tape! Our First Graders are getting better and better each week at using their planning, critical thinking, and teamwork skills!

Kindergarteners in the Kitchen

Kindergartners enjoyed using their new classroom kitchen on Friday to make playdough! They colored it green to represent FA! Go Knights!
