Where there's a will...
|Carolyn Lee, President
The adage “Where there is a will, there is way,” couldn’t be more apropos for the devoted supporters of FAB!. Because of the strong will of our dedicated board and the means and ways provided by our loyal members, FAB is well-positioned to remain a trusted funding source for Broward-based arts organizations for years to come.
My fellow board members amaze me more each day with their willingness to continue FAB!’s mission. We are making great strides in our membership development, planning even better member events and communicating more effectively with our members, corporate partners, grantees and the general public.
Just recently, during FAB!’s annual Grant Awards Reception, the community spirit displayed during the event was inspiring and uplifting. We saw, first-hand, the incredible impact that FAB! has on this community. As many as 24 groups were in attendance to claim their grants and their smiles and gratitude lit-up the room.
We are on a roll and we thank each of you for your generosity of time and resources.
YOU DID IT!
We can’t say “thank you” enough to those who have contributed to the FAB! Visionary Fund. Your generous support, plus a match from the Horvitz Family Foundation, made it possible for us to reach $87,000 last year.
Created in 2016, this Fund is an asset to the organization’s growth and development and is part of our ongoing success. We now have more loyal members than ever before!
Our commitment remains that 100% of membership dues go directly to grants, however, the Visionary Fund allows members and non-members to offer additional support. These specific funds help offset the cost of doing business which includes accounting, communications and marketing plus membership development and programming.
All new and increased gifts to the Visionary Fund are currently matched dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000 by the Horvitz Family Foundation. We will share more updates soon regarding how you can help, but in the meantime, you can learn more about the FAB! Visionary Fund at fundingartsbroward.org.
TAKING THE LEAD
The success of FAB! is a direct result of its committed volunteer board members. These individuals are the backbone of our organization and we are proud to reinforce it further with two new board members - Katharine Barry and Ed Hashek.
Katharine Barry is the founder of H.O.M.E.S Inc., a 20-year-strong non-profit that provides community and economic development programs to benefit at-risk and disadvantaged Broward residents and civic associations allowing them to accomplish redevelopment. In her leadership role, Barry oversaw several substantial art projects in public spaces along the 13th Street corridor. She is a member of the Florida Bar and is a sixth-generation Floridian.
Ed Hashek has more than 40 years of IT experience leveraging technology in the banking industry. Hashek served as a trustee for the Milwaukee Art Museum, as board president of AIDS Resource of Wisconsin and as a board member of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.
He also served on the Broward County steering committee of Broward 100, a countywide celebration of the arts which is part of the centennial of Broward County. He is currently on the board of the Island City Stage Theatre and the Community Foundation of Broward.
GRANTEE SPOTLIGHT - BRAZILIAN VOICES
Brazilian Voices is a female vocal group with 17 years of experience performing their unique musical style at schools, theaters, hospitals, cancer centers and corporate events in South Florida. This award-winning group has released seven albums/CDs and has celebrated more than 500 performances in Barcelona, Madrid, New York, London and throughout Mexico.
The group evolved out of a vocal technique workshop organized by Beatriz Malnic and Loren Oliveira in 2001. Since then, these two musical directors have brought together a cast of talented women who volunteer their voices and time, promoting and preserving their rich and diverse Brazilian heritage. Their efforts foster a multicultural exchange, music appreciation and education.
Once a year, Brazilian Voices hosts auditions to recruit new talent. As a nonprofit organization, the group relies almost solely on sponsorships and grants. Members are not compensated and all profits revert to the research and development of new projects and programs.
"Thanks to FAB!’s grant awards, Brazilian Voices is enabled to promote culture and education to students and the general public in theaters, schools and universities. We can further our mission and vision that positive experiences in our local community stimulate intercultural understanding and enhance global citizenship," said Loren Oliveira, Brazilian Voices co-founder.
180,000 REASONS TO CELEBRATE
Funding Arts Broward (FAB!), a non-profit volunteer-based arts organization committed to preserving and cultivating the arts in Broward County, Florida, announced the recipients of its 2019 grant funding during a celebratory reception presented in partnership with BBX Capital and Hoffman’s Chocolates. Grants ranging from $5,000 - $12,000 were awarded to 24 recipient organizations, totaling $180,000.
“FAB! is dedicated to supporting worthy local arts organizations that present engaging and inspirational arts programs in Broward County,” said Carolyn Lee, president of FAB!. “With government funding for the arts being cut in Florida and beyond, we have a greater need to collaborate with our individual members and corporate partners to fund local arts projects.”
The grant awards presentation was enjoyed by nearly 100 special guests representing local arts organizations and FAB! members. A lavish display of culinary delights from Argentelle Catering plus a variety of chocolates and ice cream from Hoffman’s made for a great celebration.
FAB!’s 2019 grants were awarded to organizations such as Brazilian Voices, Fantasy Theatre Factory, Florida Singing Sons, Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre, Gold Coast Jazz Society, Art and Culture Center Hollywood, Seraphic Fire, Stonewall National Museum & Archives, Symphony of the Americas and Young at Art of Broward. With this grant cycle, FAB!’s total monetary distribution to date exceeds $3 million.
Each grant allocation was awarded for a unique upcoming program. For example, Old Dillard Foundation was awarded $5,500 for its 2019 Cannonball Jazz Series. South Florida Symphony received a $12,000 grant to present George and Ira Gershwin’s beloved “Porgy and Bess.”
