Does it feel like Mother’s Day should be coming up so quickly? It doesn’t to me, but May doesn’t care….the date is May 11, and today is May 6! If you’re like me and you have no children, except maybe the four-legged kind, don’t let the day get you down! Just go buy yourself something fabulous to remind yourself that have earned your special spot in the world, that you have contributed in many other special ways. I taught high school, so I became a “mom” to a whole bunch of kids every year. When I practiced Family Law, I was the “mom” that no one liked or wanted to listen to (that generally goes with the job!). When I was introduced by my husband to the world of construction, I was a “mom” to all my guys on my drilling crews and to the city inspectors. When I lost my own Mom to Alzheimer’s, I had to step up and continue to do things with my life, so I bought a quilt shop (even though I had never made a quilt in my life!!!). Sometimes, I feel like a “mom” in the shop, but mostly I feel like a friend. So, in my world, the title of Mom denotes both the traditional meaning of having children, but also a flex meaning of feeling responsible for others in my life. Now, the question is: What fabulous thing will I buy myself???!!!??? Actually, I already did when I brought Big Mack home and into the “family”!

If your children don’t remember Mother’s Day, feel free to forward them the above paragraph: guilt them into memories of all the great times you’ve had together! Like, did your mom ever say to you: “Because I’m your mother, and THAT’S why!”? Of course, I’m kidding a bit here, to make you smile. But I’m lucky to get to hear and see so many wonderful relationships between you as Mom and your children, to see the bond that is there, the protection that exists both ways, the love that shines through, things like that. So, Happy Mother’s Day to you! We will be closed that day so everyone can spend their day in any way that brings them pleasure!
