Do you wish upon a shooting star? The Perseid meteor shower will put on a great display during the early mornings (pre-dawn) of August 12 and 13. It is amazing how natural phenomena can help spark our inner creativity. I encourage you to head out for an early walk before school and enjoy the show. While viewing the meteor shower, reflect on your new school year and the positive experiences you will be designing, and the meaningful professional development you will engage in at this year’s annual conference at Caribe Royale in Orlando. Registration will open in early August, and it is time to seek support from your administrators. Download my letter of support for administrators to encourage their endorsement of the biggest, all-inclusive professional learning event for Art Educators in the state of Florida.
The Perseid meteors, the FAEA conference, and the Member Virtual Exhibition support the bright ‘streaks’ of innovation this month. Van Gogh’s, The Starry Night, is a great example of how astronomy can become a catalyst for artistic creativity. When researching Van Gogh’s inspiration for The Starry Night, I was not surprised to see that he was reading the first publications of Astronomy in 1889. Astronomy was attracting amateur enthusiasts by publishing popular handbooks with photos of the night’s sky. The current discovery of a nebulae is represented by the large swirl in The Starry Night, and Venus, low on the horizon, was unusually bright during this month in 1889. The vision of the night as a star-filled sky became a metaphor for night as a time of release from daily work. Stargazing produces a sense of communion to heaven and earth, placing us directly in the turbulent brushwork on the canvas, and the pulsating movement of the vastness of space is mysterious and exciting. At the beginning of each school year, I reflect on where I am and how I got there, I use my own experiences as examples of how to spark creativity in students. The Starry Night connects the frenzy of the new year balanced with solid reasoning to enable my students to break new ground by capturing the sublime and celebrating the power to defy forces of nature. Help your students explore grand possibilities this year, allow them to connect with one another through spontaneous productions and glorify the power of the heavens. Document the learning through journal entries and testimonials and display their work and ideas. Keep art education a source of great pride in your school and community. Let us light up the sky with our dedication to excellence in art education. Spend some time to wish upon a shooting star!
