Greetings!

Happy 4th of July!

Have you created any artwork lately? Consider submitting it in FAEA’s Member Virtual Exhibition . Artwork submissions are now being accepted until September 8th. Visit the FAEA website to view the rules and eligibility to participate in the 2020 Member Virtual Exhibition.

The 2020 FAEA Annual Conference in Ponte Vedra Beach has officially been canceled due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic in the months ahead. Instead, FAEA will be providing a Virtual Conference and supplemental digital learning workshops throughout the Fall semester for members to gain professional development. Details of the Virtual Conference will be announced in the coming weeks.
Postcard from the President
July is the month to focus on self-care and to dive into some creative virtual ArtLabs . As part of my self-care program, I will finish reading the book The Nature Fix by Florence Williams. This book has provided me with a strong foundation for opening both my heart and mind to “discovery,” finding moments of awe in my daily life. Awe promotes curiosity which leads to creativity. When we experience things outside of our normal routine we allow ourselves to see the world around us with a new awareness. These experiences are then seared into our memory. Experiencing awe has a dramatic effect on our immune system. According to the research reviewed by Williams (2017), “Cytokine IL-6, a marker for inflammation, helps heal wounds and fight illness…. of all the positive emotions, experiencing awe was the only one that predicted significantly lower levels of IL-6” (p.197). Taking care of ourselves and removing distractions in our daily lives are goals for enjoying the month of July. For me, it begins with a morning stretch routine, sketching, and then bike rides through the neighborhood with butterflies, birds, and sounds of summer.

Yoga, designed through ethical and moral codes (yamas and the niyamas), can become another form of self-care for the month of July. Through yoga you build strength, power, and transform your body and mind to view the world through a different lens, focused on positive feelings. Yoga’s fundamental philosophy is focused on guiding people to take care of themselves through social restraint and self-discipline (hence yamas and niyamas). I have been slowly building one new yoga pose into my morning stretch routine. This month I will add the ‘root bond’ pose, which is part of the Pranayama grouping of poses. Learning simple poses that help contribute to my breathing and self-care are essential before our school schedules become challenging to manage.

Whatever you choose for self-care strategies this month, focus on the joy and awe in the world around you. Let yourself be inspired through nature, books, conversations, and exercise. Before the end of the month, consider entering one of your ‘awe inspired’ artworks to the Member Virtual Exhibition competition.

As our summer starts to set, know that FAEA will be there to help support you through virtual professional learning. Our board of directors are poised to become the facilitators of positive change, so take on the month with a focus on self-care!

CANCELED: 2020 FAEA Annual Conference

The FAEA Board of Directors has voted to cancel the Annual Conference in Ponte Vedra Beach due to the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the ability to gather safely in large groups. The health and safety of members, attendees, partners, and the Association is our priority. The Annual Conference will resume in 2021 and 2022 in Orlando before returning to Ponte Vedra in 2023.

FAEA is committed to delivering high-quality, meaningful professional development. As we are unable to meet in person this year, FAEA will provide information about the 2020 Virtual Conference soon. FAEA will offer monthly opportunities to connect, learn, and refresh in a virtual setting to supplement and support the Virtual Conference.

Thank you for your continued support. FAEA wishes you good health and safety.
Thank you for your support of FAEA. Our members help FAEA fulfill its mission of advocating and supporting high-quality art education to all students in the state of Florida.

Sincerely,
