Greetings!
I hope that this month finds you well and feeling the uplifting currents of Spring!
One of the important events for FAEA each March is the National Art Education Association’s (NAEA) Annual Conference. This conference is much like our state conference but on a larger scale. It is an opportunity to engage in professional development, forums, and learning at the national level! This year, we were in person again which was definitely something to celebrate! The conference was held in New York City, which was the perfect setting for the conference and provided for meaningful experiences and fun throughout the city. I attended the Delegates Assembly with Latonya Hicks, our President-Elect. This meeting brings together the state art organization leadership from every state and some international entities as well. The Delegates engage in important work to move art education forward in every arena. The focus of most of the work done this year was on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, which FAEA is also working on in several areas. While there, we celebrated FAEA wins for the Newsletter Award Category II Honorable Mention and Website Award Category II. We also celebrated FAEA members Debi Barrett-Hayes for winning the Mac Arthur Goodwin Award for Distinguished Service Within the Profession and Steve Miller for Florida's Educator of the Year Award. The NAEA Annual Conference is such a good learning experience for all concerned, especially those interested in leadership. Please consider attending next year in San Antonio!
On a local level, Youth Art Month is in full swing and I know you are doing exciting activities with your students and community. Be sure to share your students’ creations and the things you are doing to promote art education with us! We want to share some of the great things you are doing. You can send pictures and descriptions to info@FAEA.org. We will post as many as we can!
I know how hard you have all been working and the heart and soul you pour into your students and communities. There is a quote by Vincent Van Gogh that makes me think of all of you working in arts education, especially this year: “I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart.” This is YOU! As you prepare to take some time for yourself during Spring Break, I hope that you know that you are appreciated and that you are making significant contributions to your students’ lives! Take the time to have some fun and soak up some well-deserved “unscheduled time!”

March is Youth Art Month (YAM)!
|
|
FAEA invites all art educators to participate in YAM activities! Celebrations can be as simple as a single class learning activity that focuses attention to the value of arts, or celebrations can involve collaborations that result in multi-school art exhibits. You can start with one thing that you already are doing successfully and design a way to share the value gained by your students with parents, with school administrators, with the community, and/or with politicians.

Congratulations to Saniya Jones and her teacher, Joshua Steele, for winning the 2022 Youth Art Month Flag Design Competition! Saniya is a 9th-grade student from Davenport High School in Polk County.
The winning design, which incorporates the national theme of "Art Connects Us," was selected by a panel of judges to represent the state of Florida at the NAEA Convention in New York City!
