Monthly News from the President's Palette
This month I have been contemplating the power of finding your community . I fondly remember my first FAEA Annual Conference and of how I walked away from the experience with a wonder and curiosity about the people that I had met that were doing work like me in many different ways. The attendees cared about art, education, connection, and transformation. I was hooked. I hadn’t felt this sense of belonging before, and now I had discovered the place of my people!

This may seem a bit warm and fuzzy to some folks, but I recently read an article published in Psychology Today , detailing the health benefits of finding your “team.” Finding your group protects your health, and “human beings nourish one another.” Another article I read stated, “being part of a collective of people you click with can make you feel empowered and strong, augmenting your life and enriching it with positivity.”

Like many of you, I am the only visual art educator in my school, and it can be a bit lonely. In an online article , it listed encouragement, support, challenge, gratitude, and celebration as the benefits of finding a community and being an active part of it. I think that list is a very accurate representation of what FAEA means to me.

This is the time of year when our group reconnects. Attending the FAEA Annual Conference nourishes us, inspires and instills wonderment in us, and energizes and uplifts us. The importance of being in a community has always been known, but after you have attended a conference, you can actually feel the results. The conference homecoming event that over 600 art educators attend builds solidarity, cohesive unity, and works to reverse the effects of depletion of spirit. The sister and brotherhood of FAEA membership restores our passion for a profession that we are deeply connected with. The friendships made there keep us healthy and make our lives better, even beyond the profession of art education.

The first time I attended conference, a colleague invited me. It was a life-transforming event. I encourage you to reach out to your art education family, and invite them to reconnect to our larger state community this November.

Donate items for the Big Giveaway at Conference!
Do you feel the need to un-clutter your art storage closets? Thin out your art library? Please consider donating these items to this year's Big Giveaway at FAEA's Professional Development Conference. Each year, this event has been hugely successful, and we want this year to be no different. Items can be as simple as a bag of plastic containers for water, or as elaborate as a set of art prints or art education books. These young teachers will grab them up and be forever grateful to you. Bring your donations to registration, and we will be sure to get them to our storage area until we are ready for the event on Saturday, November 9. Thank you in advance for your generosity. #FAEA2019
