Postcard from the President
Teachers across the state have prepared for a school year brimming with unprecedented challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. A likely byproduct? Creative solutions from our group of professionals. Having spent time with many of you over the summer through Zoom ArtLabs, I know you have some art to share. Sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves. Show off your creativity by entering the Member Virtual Exhibition (MVE), the deadline is September 8th.

We, the FAEA Board, have developed many professional learning experiences for you this year, with monthly Zoom sessions and an amazing virtual conference coming to you on November 7th and 8th. Thanks to the Professional Development Committee and the superb leadership of our chair, Nancy Puri, we are ready to dive into virtual learning. Our Partners and Sponsors committee has also been weaving their expertise into our virtual conference event helping to supply us with lots of goodies from our vendors. Katie Avra, our chair of the P&S committee, has shown commendable leadership as she guides the committee members in communicating with respect and gratitude when reaching out to our Partners during these uncertain times. This will be a virtual event showcasing our members creativity while promoting collaboration between the divisions.

Kristina Latraverse, our Advocacy Chair, has guided the committee work with a focus on Self-Advocacy, with a monthly social media blast called Self-Care Sundays. Other reflective and self-care websites for educators are emerging to help us through this unusual time. An interesting research-based site I discovered was Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education, or CARE, created in 2017 by scholars and mindfulness practitioners.

If you have been following my articles in the monthly e-newsletters, you know that I am an avid reader. This month I am reading a very poetic book by Louise Penny, How the Light Gets In. It is a novel set in Quebec following the life of a great homicide inspector. As the title implies, this novel is based in personal and career hardship of the chief inspector as he emotionally battles with others’ destructive and demeaning attitudes. How the inspector handles the conflicts and negative energy is revealed through his positive mindset and ability to see the light of goodness. It is similar, I am sure, to how many of us battle some of the negative in our lives and learn how to keep it from destroying our own inner beauty. I have had some hardships lately and I must say that thanks to two former FAEA presidents, I am learning How the Light Gets In. Thank you, Mabel Morales and Jack Matthews for your guidance through some challenges and helping me set my spiritual anchor. Focusing on the positive and communicating a message of respect and collaboration is at the core of Creative Leadership and will set FAEA on the path toward excellence in education as we face the battles ahead with dignity, grace, and compassion.
