Meet Mack!
Introducing Mack the Moose. Mack’s name was recently picked by the Historical Society’s Board of Directors because Mack resides in the Mackinaw Historic District on Franklin’s west side.
What’s in a name? The Mackinaw District was originally part of land purchased in 1805 by William Barkalow. By 1860 the land was owned by James Chamberlain and L.G. Anderson.
Lots were sold and the remaining land was sold in 1887 to the Mackinaw Development Corporation, named for the Cincinnati, Jackson and Mackinaw Railroad that arrived in Franklin in 1886. The Development Company divided the land into 450 lots.
The area contains some of the best examples of late 19th and early 20th century architecture in Franklin. In 1980, the Mackinaw District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Thanks to everyone who suggested names for the Harding Museum’s moose. Mack will be hanging around the museum so stop by for a visit.
