FALA Buzz
9/2/18
Hope everyone is enjoying their long holiday weekend! In this issue of The Buzz, you'll find volunteer opportunities (for students and parents), information on college visits, and learn more about how to help one of FALA's current Scholarship Exchange students in need of a host family.

At left: Last week, FALA's Environmental Club was at Al Gore's Climate Reality Project Training in LA. They can now train others and share what they've learned with the Flagstaff community. Learn more about what this organization and what they're doing here:  https://www.climaterealityproject.org

FALA Campus Beautification Event
Come to the Volunteer Corps “Campus Beautification Event” on Saturday, September 8 from 9:00 am to Noon.

Join us for our beginning of the year FALA Campus Beautification Day as we learn how to identify and best remove invasive weeds on the FALA campus! We are putting together a landscaping plan utilizing community input from several botanists and need your help to accomplish the first step. We need to get rid of weeds and prune back the existing shrubs and trees.

Bring gloves, hats, sunscreen, and water bottles.

Parents, come to meet other FALA families who are interested in supporting the FALA community. Students, this is a great way to earn service hours and show your school spirit!

For more information, contact Debbie Bodin (Beautification Team Captain) at 928-699-4762, debbie@flagstaffcentral.com , or go to www.falavolunteers.com .

Scholarship Exchange Student Needs Host Family
The Scholarship Exchange students are sponsored by the State Department to promote peace and diplomacy amongst our countries. The students are chosen from a highly competitive process for their academics, personality, and leadership. They are expected to volunteer; give presentations on their country and culture; and learn about democracy, cultural diversity, and leadership. Each student is provided a monthly stipend to cover their expenses and full medical insurance.

We have a 17 year old from Kazakhstahn who is attending FALA and needs a family for 8 months (Around end of Sept until end of May) . Aizhan speaks Kazak, Russian, and English. She enjoys art, Photography, guitar, playing instruments, outdoor education, and animals. Her teacher describes her as responsible, motivated, adaptable, and honest.

Families can be retired, single parent, and Aizhan is able to share a room w a closely aged sibling. The family provides love and support for a teen; a quiet place to study and a bed, and shares meals. This is a great way to bring cultural diversity into the home and gain a daughter for life. Please consider stepping out of your comfort zone and Making a Difference in the World. Please Share Your America by sharing your heart and home.

To host Aizhan, please contact Marcia Goebel, Coordinator for PAX for 22 years, 928 301.9868 or marciagoebel@yahoo.com

FAFSA Night for Seniors and Parents: Wednesday, October 17th, 6:00 PM, @ FALA Room 16.

If you have a laptop, please bring it, however we will have computers available.

Every senior should complete the FAFSA, even if you do not think your family will qualify for financial aid. Federal Student Aid is responsible for managing the student financial assistance programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 . These programs provide grants, loans, and work-study funds to students attending college or career school. Filling out the FAFSA is also recommended for students who plan on taking a gap year.

Please go to the FALA School Counseling Website "College Events" to see the list of documents you should bring to FAFSA Night.
