APS Holiday Helpers, community partners provide holiday assistance for 29 Families, 90 Children
The Allendale Schools' annual Holiday Helpers program adopted 29 families, including 90 children this year! Staff members are invited to take a tag from Christmas trees located in school offices and purchase an item for an Allendale student.
"We also extended to our school family, community and local businesses for anyone who wanted to grab a tag and purchase an item," said Deb DeLooff, who co-coordinates the district-wide program with Bill Patteuw. The long-standing program has become an important tradition among district employees.
All gifts were delivered to Spring Valley Church where the adopted families "shopped" for Christmas gifts for their children. Families also selected a pair of pajamas, socks, underwear and a few stocking stuffers for each child. Love INC of Allendale provided a holiday meal to each family.

The Gift of Kindness
Springview third grade teachers Sara Baker and Heather Vruggink take a different approach to Holiday Giving. They do a project they call "The Gift of Kindness."
"We start this project on December 1," said Ms. Vruggink. "Each day we reveal (turn over) a new gift from our gift board. On the back of each gift, there is an act of kindness. We set aside time each day to do the act of kindness that was revealed."
