From the desk of our
Interim Executive Director
As I'm writing this letter, the country is focused on a series of natural disasters in the form of Harvey and Irma. The response to such disasters is usually an immediate compassionate response by government and individuals to alleviate the suffering of others.
The Sanskrit word
"Maitri" is often translated as
"the love a mother has for her child." This is a very different type of compassion, and one that I've had the privilege to observe for the past three months as Interim Executive Director of Maitri Compassionate Care. Like many parent-child relationships, this compassion is often fiercely protective; but just as often it's about letting go - either for respite clients moving to a more independent setting, or the transition of our end-of-life residents.
This week, the Maitri Board and staff begin their final rounds of interviews for a permanent Executive Director to lead Maitri into the future. And as I face the likely end of my interim role in the next month or so, I'm pondering the idea of letting go. It hardly seems possible that three months have flown by. Part of me looks forward to putting hours into other activities, but the rest of me will miss the daily ebb and flow of life within the walls of Maitri - often far removed from the natural disasters, political posturing, and even neighborhood activities on the streets below.
I marvel at what has been created at Maitri over its many years of caring for others. Although Maitri has been close to my heart for many years, this return has opened my eyes to the meaning of compassion and what's important in our lives, just as it did twenty years ago. I would invite you to look at ways to deepen your connection to this type of compassion. We are enriching our Volunteer Program with the help of our new Volunteer Program Coordinator, David Valentine (415-558-3004), to engage and empower volunteers at a deeper level. Whether helping at the bedside or assisting in the office or with our annual fundraising event, Bliss (May 6, 2018), there are plenty of ways to get involved directly. For those of you who wish to notch up your financial support of Maitri, contact Toni Newman, our Development Manager (415-558-5003) to find out about monthly pledges, estate giving, or sponsorship for Bliss 2018.
By the time the next newsletter is in your hands (or on your screen), we will hopefully have much news to provide. By early October, I hope Maitri will be able to announce a new Executive Director, a new tenant for the front area of Maitri's first-floor commercial space with whom we have signed a Letter of Intent, and some new/renewed funding from our city partners. I hope also, that the next month finds you with a renewed connection to the compassion that a mother has for her child.
Here's what we have for you in this issue:
Please consider forwarding this newsletter to a friend who may not yet know us. As always, thank you so much for your generous support of
Maitri's programs benefiting our residents who struggle every day with advanced AIDS.

Maitri is excited to welcome Jane Wong to the Maitri Board of Directors. Jane Wong is currently a vice president in equity research at BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research, on the Enterprise Software team in San Francisco. Prior to joining the software team, Jane was a research analyst on the US REITs (real estate investment trusts) team in New York since 2009. Jane graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and International Affairs.
Jame says "I'm interested in Maitri and Board service because of the important and impactful service it provides - a welcoming residence offering care for those living with or suffering from HIV/AIDS. I'm a fairly new resident to San Francisco, and I wanted to become involved with an organization that has roots and history in city of San Francisco, which Maitri has. While I was in school in Georgia, I volunteered with an organization that provided quality of life care for children with HIV/AIDS -- it made me realize how much of an epidemic still exists in our country today, not just abroad."
Jane is also marrying Nicholas Smith this month in Atlanta and Maitri says congratulations.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Maitri. We are so thankful for all those who assist our residents and bring cheer to our local community.
Volunteers help with all facets of life at Maitri - from taking residents on outings and to medical appointments, sitting with ill or dying residents, lending a hand with administrative projects and fundraising events - to helping maintain our thriving community garden.
We have three Volunteer Orientations scheduled through the end of the year. Orientations are introductions to Maitri for anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer, they will be Saturday mornings between 9:00am - 10:00am, October 7th, November 4th, and December 2nd.
There is a Volunteer Extension Training scheduled for November 4th, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, for existing volunteers.
Please consider becoming more deeply engaged with Maitri as a volunteer. For more information about volunteering, or to get started today, please contact Volunteer Coordinator, David Valentine, (415) 558-3004 or
