Welcome back, Spartans!

The A.S. Board of Directors is YOUR student body government, working to represent and advocate for the needs, issues, and concerns of over 36,000 students. Please feel free to join us at our next board meeting on Wednesday, September 11, from 3-6pm in Student Union Meeting Room 1A! Everyone is welcome! Homecoming is a few weeks away and we’re looking for students to be a part of Homecoming Royalty. Read below for more details. 

We’re also looking for students-at-large to serve on A.S. Committees. This is a great way to get involved on-campus, find a committee that interests you, and make your voice heard! To learn more about our committees, please click here or feel free to swing by the A.S. Government office on the 2nd floor (Suite 2300) of the Student Union. 

Lastly, be on the lookout for the new Meet the Board video coming out soon! The Board is excited to share all our upcoming projects and initiatives for the year. Follow us on social media to stay up-to-date with everything we’re up to. Have a great start to the Fall semester, Spartans!

New funding program!

Funds may be used for travel and/or professional development. Graduate and undergraduate students may apply once a year for up $750 maximum per student.

Applicants must show proof of invitation to present a paper, perform a piece or compete as an individual.

Funds from this program are not applicable if you are applying as a member of a recognized student organization.

13th Annual Fire on the Fountain
Thursday, Oct 17th, 4-9pm, Tower Lawn

Fire on the Fountain (FotF) is an annual event celebrating SJSU's Homecoming. Enjoy booths, games, food, inflatable rides and performances. The evening culminates at 8pm with a spectacular fire show and pep rally featuring the football team, cheerleaders and an introduction to the 2019 Homecoming Court. Applications to table or perform due Friday, October 4th by 5pm.

Workshop #1: Commanding Attention - Representing Yourself with Confidence and Purpose
Wednesday, September 11th, 12-1pm, Student Union Meeting Room 1B

From large presentations to job interviews, phone conversations and interpersonal dialogue, communicating a clear and compelling message continues to be a competency that can catapult or stall your goals. This interactive workshop is designed to introduce practical skills in order to speak and communicate yourself and personal brand persuasively, with confidence and purpose. The session will also offer tips to overcome common intrapersonal barriers to success, including fear of public speaking.

Workshop #2: Turning Adversity into Positive Career Traits + Introduction to LinkedIn
Tuesday, October 1st, 1:30-3pm, Student Union Meeting Room 3A

Each of us has our own story. Our own struggles. Our own victories. Our own purpose. Ideals that have been passed on from generation to generation redefined by experiences and cemented in our hearts from the joy of triumphing over adversity. This workshop takes you on a personal journey of belittlement, self-doubt, cultural reaffirmation and embracing YOUR uniqueness. This workshop will be facilitated by Oscar Garcia from Aspira and will include an introduction to LinkedIn for students.

Climate-Resilient Communities

Interested in the relationship between climate justice, policy reform and community action? Join speaker Mari Rose Taruc and learn how to build social and legislative reform for environmentally-just and resilient communities. Taruc has two decades of experience as an environmental justice leader with the Filipino/American Coalition for Environmental Solidarity, Asian Pacific Environmental Network, Movement Generation, and California Environmental Justice Alliance. 

Cooking with SJSU Garden

Interested in creating delicious, plant-based meals and snacks? Join our 3-part series of cooking demos. Cook with Wellness & Health Student Kitchen ambassadors and Food Management Professor, Jamie Kubota. Enjoy a cooking demo and gourmet tasting with the Student Kitchen. Meals will use fresh campus garden vegetables and herbs.
