NU Simulation Mass Casualty Drill at NMH

This photo shows a critical moment from our April 4, 2025, mass casualty drill at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH), staging standardized patients on gurneys before they enter the Emergency Department (ED) during our simulated trauma. Upon arrival at the ED, our medical staff used standardized patients to practice and refine high-pressure skills and mass casualty protocols. The event marks our third mass casualty simulation, giving NMH leadership valuable data about processes that work and those that need improvements. These essential training events allow hospital personnel to train in a safe environment, improving the hospital’s readiness for a catastrophic event.

Immersive Simulation Day

The Outpatient Simulation Team had the pleasure of hosting an immersive simulation day for 25 NUDOC students from Northeastern University, who spent their spring break exploring medicine.

The day began with hands-on training in ultrasound, arterial line insertion, and central line placement, led by resident instructors. In the afternoon, students engaged in four standardized patient encounters and practiced assessing vital signs with the Harvey Heart Simulator.

Thanks to Dr. Quentin Youmans and Tameka Brannon for their expert leadership, making this day an unforgettable learning experience. We appreciate the enthusiasm and curiosity of the NUDOC students, whose energy made the event a true success. We look forward to continuing to inspire future medical professionals!

Surgeons and Engineers: A Dialogue on Surgical Simulation

Research Assistant Professor Dr. Jafar Arash Mehr presented at the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Surgeons and Engineers: A Dialogue on Surgical Simulation Conference in March. His research uses AI and computer vision to distinguish expert vs. novice performance in suturing, paving the way for data-driven systems that provide objective feedback and improve medical procedure training.
