Master Gardeners/Master Naturalists

BECOME A FLUVANNA MASTER GARDENER SPRING 2027

- Pursue your personal interests

- Make new like-minded friends

- Help the community

- Support the environment

What do Master Gardeners do?

Master Gardener volunteers share an interest in horticultural practices that are sound, sustainable, and environmentally applicable to their specific local ecosystem. The nation-wide network is trained and supported through the USDA Cooperative Extension program that has focused on best practices for agriculture, food production, and home gardening for more than 110 years. Fluvanna Master Gardeners is a very active local chapter!

How to join their efforts:

The Fluvanna Master Gardener training program begins in mid-January and runs through late April. Classes are held on Thursday evenings online and are presented by Virginia Tech University professors or recognized experts in their fields. Several field experiences with experienced Master Gardeners are held at local sites on Saturdays.

Each Master Gardener completes a 50-hour training program encompassing the full spectrum of topics encountered within the home garden. There are attendance and homework requirements. An experienced Fluvanna Master Gardener mentor is assigned to each student. Following training, 50 hours of volunteer service is required. In subsequent years, education (8 hours annually} and service requirements (20 hours annually} continue.

Program Info:

The cost is $200. This covers all course expenses and the course text. Scholarships are available. Further information and applications are available through the Fluvanna Master Gardener's website www.fluvannamg.org. Or contact Brittney Redman at (434} 591-1950, by email bredman@vt.edu.

Live, in-person Information Sessions are scheduled for October 24th, 2-3:30pm & October 29th, 6-7:30pm, both at the Fluvanna County Public Library.

Interagency Council & Regional Partners

The Fluvanna County Interagency Council is comprised of over 25 local and regional human service organizations.

JABA, a nonprofit that supports older adults, is conducting a community-wide survey to determine interest in topics related to aging, wellness, disability, and/or older adult and caregiving needs. This short survey (https://form.jotform.com/OutreachEvents/community-engagement-survey) is designed to help us understand what topics, formats, and ideas the public is most interested in seeing.

Please take the survey to help us ensure that everyone has the opportunity for their voice to be heard. Survey results will be used to inform JABA's Aging R(E)volution Podcast, blog, newsletter, and other communications like videos. Your feedback will help us create resources for our community that are engaging, relevant, and valuable.
