Rivanna Master Naturalists

July 2: Let’s look for what lives in our streams!!! Meet at 10am at the Pole Barn at the end of the road behind the Haden House and we will hike down to the stream to see what is there. Wear River Shoes - No Flip-Flops - No Crocs! - and expect to be surprised.

August 6: Did someone say eat? Let’s hike the Quail Meadow Trail and see what the animals are finding to eat. Meet at 10am. Park where the road to the soccer field turns to gravel and the kiosk tells you this is the place. We will look at various sources of food, as well as see how the controlled burn is growing back.

September 3: Meet at the first picnic shelter below the Dog Park at 10am to walk the ADA friendly trail to the Sandy Beach and return via the Princess Anne trail along the Rivanna. During the hike you will observe the Honey Locust whose spikes were used as sewing needles by native Americans and early European settlers. You will also see “Horse Apple” trees that were used as pasture fencing before the invention of barbed wire. You will see the results of efforts of our Pleasant Grove volunteers and Parks and Rec to remove the alien Ailanthus trees from the park to help prevent the spread of the invasive spotted lantern fly, a serious threat to our vineyards and other fruit crops. * If you want to loiter at Sandy Beach for a quick dip, you are welcome to enjoy the park there.

*During these hikes we will also discuss the newest invasive pest, the spotted lantern fly, to come to our area from overseas, the invasive host tree, the Tree-of-Heaven, and the possible devastation this insect threatens to our fruit (grapes, etc.) crops here in the Virginia Piedmont.
Children MUST be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.

Monthly Hikes on the 1st Saturday of the month. See Calendar for details.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD - REGIONAL NATURAL HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN 30-DAY COMMENT PERIOD: June 1 – June 30, 2022

The TJPDC works with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), and local emergency managers to develop and maintain a regional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan. The plan is updated every 5-years and provides details on how our communities can take action to prepare for natural disasters before they strike, thus reducing the potential for loss of life and property damage when disasters do occur. The hazard mitigation planning process is guided by the Hazard Mitigation Working Group, which consists of representatives from each locality in the planning district and other state and community stakeholders.

The Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPDC) invites all interested citizens to comment on the Draft Regional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP). The HMP identifies goals, objectives and specific actions to help our communities prepare for natural disasters before they occur, in order to reduce loss of life and property damage. The draft plan is available on the TJPDC Hazard Mitigation Page (https://tjpdc.org/our-work/hazard-mitigation/) or contacting Ian Baxter at ibaxter@tjpdc.org or (434) 422-4082. Comments are accepted until June 30, 2022. Submit your comments to ibaxter@tjpdc.org.
Fluvanna Meals on Wheels is accepting new clients. There is no age requirement and most clients do not pay for their meals. For those that do have the means, or wish to pay for meals, a sliding scale is available. Please call (434) 589-1685 for more information.
