Ali Ibriham:
Seven Seas Sound Off
The state of Florida is often called the fishing capital of the world, with more than 10,000 miles of rivers for both the pro and rookie anglers. However, this has led to overfishing of multiple fish species, including the commercially and ecologically important grouper, according to Ali Ibrahim, postdoctoral fellow in the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI), who is eavesdropping on these threatened species to help find ways to protect them. Postdoctoral Teaching Survey
Teaching can play a pivotal role in the postdoctoral experience. That’s why the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is exploring ways to provide teaching opportunities to postdocs interested in adding this experience to their training.
At FAU, teaching opportunities can come in various shapes and sizes from full-semester courses to guest lecturing to block teaching. But we need your help to create these opportunities. Please carve out a few minutes to complete a short survey by July 9. Your vital feedback will help determine the overall interest in teaching experience as well as bring to light any concerns.
In addition, postdocs interested in gaining teaching and/or speaking experience should consider exploring the following two opportunities provided by the A.D. Henderson University School/FAU High School.
- Guest lecturing in a research course series to talk about your professional path and your research
- Join a few sessions in a neurophysiology course to consult with students as they develop their research projects. Postdocs don’t have to be a neuroscience expert to be able to provide valuable advice on project design, strategies to troubleshoot experimental issues, developing a good research question, identifying gaps in their understanding to inform their future reading, etc.
