Dear FAVOR family,
“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant,” wrote English poet Anne Bradstreet. “If we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”
Spring is my favorite time of year. It brings new life, new color, and a fresh perspective to my world. The only thing I need to do to appreciate the natural beauty is to let it in. It’s similar to the disease of addiction and the beauty of recovery. When we’re stuck in our disease it can be hard to see a way through it; but when we accept a kind word from a friend or a thoughtful gesture from a stranger, we begin to see the goodness this life offers.
Today at the Spartanburg Center my friend Sheila Snoddy (PhD, International Families and Communities) reminded me that “everyone wants to have a sense of purpose.” And she’s right. When we find our sense of purpose it provides direction and meaning and brings a sense of fulfillment that we wouldn’t otherwise know.
FAVOR is crystal clear in its purpose: we work “to provide everyone in the Upstate a fighting chance at recovery.” Would you like to join FAVOR Upstate by sharing compassion, hope and recovery with friends you’ve not yet met? FAVOR hosts a number of outreach events every month where we meet people where they are – emotionally and physically – and provide a kind word, a loving gesture, or perhaps a listening ear. Read more about our volunteer/outreach opportunities later in this newsletter and make a purposeful choice to share the beauty of recovery.
“The heart is like a garden. It can grow compassion or fear, resentment or love. What seeds will you plant there?” -Jack Kornfield
With love and support,
Lesley
