Dear Friends and Family,

FAVOR Upstate is expanding Certified Peer Support Services in Pickens County, SC! Through the generosity of Pickens County residents who want their friends, families, and neighbors to thrive, and in partnership with Behavioral Health Services of Pickens CountyPickens County Detention Center and Brushy Creek Baptist Church, we are set for a soft open early September 2024.

FAVOR’s expansion into Pickens County is timely, as many (or all) parts of the Upstate have faced significant challenges related to substance use issues. FAVOR Upstate's Certified Peer Support Services provide a critical lifeline for individuals and families struggling with addiction, offering personalized guidance, emotional support, and practical advice from peers who have successfully navigated similar challenges. Peer support not only empowers individuals and families to achieve long-term recovery, but also helps reduce the stigma associated with addiction, promoting a more compassionate and understanding community.

As individuals in recovery, like me, receive the support we need to rebuild our lives, we begin giving back to society which improves overall health and safety. FAVOR Upstate's expansion also underscores the benefits of collaborating with local stakeholders, including our existing relationships with healthcare providers, law enforcement agencies and community organizations to create a cohesive and comprehensive support network. This community-based approach ensures that individuals and families seeking relief from SUD have access to a continuum of care, from immediate crisis intervention to long-term support, ultimately fostering a healthier, more resilient Upstate.

With love and support,

Lesley

Rebuilding Lives: Supporting SUD Recovery in Upstate Emergency Departments

In partner agencies across the Upstate, lives are being changed through dedicated support for those experiencing Substance Use Disorders (SUD). Our partner-based Recovery Specialists provide personalized guidance and resources, empowering individuals on their journey to recovery. Join us as we explore impactful stories of transformation and resilience, guided by our committed team of Recovery Specialists making a difference in the lives of those facing SUD challenges.

In late May, I had a patient struggling with alcohol use disorder who was admitted to the hospital and experiencing withdrawal, which meant he wouldn't be discharged for several days. Initially, he was completely uninterested in inpatient treatment, so we discussed Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for alcohol use disorder and outpatient options on the first day.

When I returned for my shift the following day, the patient started asking questions about inpatient programs. One of his greatest concerns was being away from his family for so long, as even the shortest program would mean missing then for weeks. After careful consideration and conversations with his family and myself, he decided that 30-60 days to find recovery could mean a lifetime of being healthy for himself and his family. Another concern was employment - he likes his job and couldn't afford to be without income as he is the sole provider for his family. I was able to confirm with the treatment center we were considering that they would help him with paperwork for short-term disability.

This experience truly embodies the spirit of rebuilding lives in our emergency department.

Volunteerism

Volunteer Spotlight: James Mazyck

James Mazyck began his recovery journey over three years ago. It was not a smooth journey as he struggled to find his way, but with the help of his recovery specialist and his desire to live life differently he celebrated one year of continuous recovery on July 19. James was encouraged by the Salvation Army in Anderson to check out the FAVOR Upstate Anderson Center. Walking through those doors made all the difference for him, and now his recovery is resilient and vibrant.

James is a constant presence at the Anderson Center showing up early for every All-Recovery meeting to help set-up for the meeting, clean up around the inside and outside of the building, and do whatever is necessary that day to ready the facility to welcome folks. James is very grateful for FAVOR and said “I am a whole lot better now. FAVOR has helped me turn my life around. I don’t do the things I had been doing. Finding FAVOR has made me a very blessed man.”

The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray

Ever sworn off alcohol for a month and found yourself drinking by the 7th? Think there's 'no point' in just one drink? Welcome! There are millions of us.

Catherine Gray was stuck in a hellish whirligig of Drink, Make horrible decisions, Hangover, Repeat. She had her fair share of 'drunk tank' jail cells and topless-in-a-hot-tub misadventures.

But this book goes beyond the binges and blackouts to deep-dive into uncharted territory: What happens after you quit drinking? This gripping, heart-breaking and witty book takes us down the rabbit-hole of an alternative reality. A life with zero hangovers, through sober weddings, sex, Christmases and breakups.
