Dear Friends,

Meeting People* Where They Are

* Insert your preferred “people:” individuals, families, communities, neighbors, colleagues, partners, sorority/fraternity siblings, professionals, friends, foes…

“Meeting people where they are” is a catchphrase we frequently hear these days, but what does it mean? Does it mean we physically go to the places people congregate? Does it mean we go to the classrooms, the shelters, churches, community centers, and homes where people gather? Yes, that’s part of what it means.

But perhaps more importantly, “meeting people where they are” means bridging the gap between our own expectations and where the other person is coming from. It means recognizing a person as a unique individual, understanding, and respecting their unique situations, and acknowledging their personal beliefs and behaviors. It means looking a person in the eyes and saying, “I see you.”

FAVOR’s Peer Support Specialists are Professional Meeters of People. A FAVOR certified Peer Support Specialist is a master at creating environments free from stigma and void of condemnation; they hold PhDs in creating spaces that build trust and rapport. A coach is someone who listens without judgement, understands without bias, and loves without expectations. Coaches embody a special kind of humility that allows one person to speak to another on equal footing.

Doesn’t that sound like someone you want to know? If you’ve not had the privilege of talking with one of our certified Peer Support Specialists, do it today. You may just make a new friend.

With love and support,

Lesley

One of the things that is often vital in successful recovery is the ability to obtain and maintain employment. Vocational Rehab sees the value in this and works with individuals to help them be able to work through the limitations associated with substance use disorder. The ultimate goal being sobriety and competitive employment.

Jeff Martin is the Area Supervisor for the Oconee/Pickens South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation office in Seneca, SC. He has been with Vocational Rehab for eight years, and he spent the majority of his time before this position as a counselor with the agency serving their Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation facilities’ consumers. During Jeff’s time with the agency, he has worked with countless individuals on their journey of recovery and vocational rehabilitation.

Volunteerism

Volunteer Spotlight: Beth Holladay-Edwards

Beth Holladay-Edwards has been in recovery for over two years now. Referred to FAVOR by a friend in December of 2021, it has not been an effortless journey for her, but one that has ultimately been very fulfilling and rewarding.

A large part of Beth’s recovery odyssey has been actively volunteering her time. She is a regular at the Greenville Center front desk, serves as a panelist for outreach at local recovery facilities, and pens book reviews for the monthly FAVOR Upstate newsletter.

Ambassador Spotlight: Angel Williams

I became an ambassador for FAVOR Upstate because I believe in the program and the support that it provides to individuals who are in recovery, families and community partners.

Recovery is not only about a person but is about the village and in my opinion, the village extends beyond the family. It includes community partners and other stakeholders. To have a healthier community we must all play our part to address stigma and how it affects the delivery or access to care or other services.

Interested in Becoming an Ambassador?

Ambassadors are volunteers who support FAVOR Upstate's mission by hosting a Hope and Healing Hour with 10 or more guests. The purpose of these sessions is to engage more people in the community and share the impact of FAVOR Upstate's work in rebuilding lives, healing families, and strengthening communities.

To learn how you can become an Ambassador or to host your own Hope and Healing Hour, contact Summer Spears at summer@favorupstate.org or Carroll Easterling at carroll@favorupstate.org.

FAVOR Upstate Featured Book of the Month

FAVOR Upstate houses a sizable library in the Greenville Center that is open to all. Stop by and browse our selection: if you need a book, take a book. Or if you have a book, leave a book.

Special thanks to Beth Holladay-Edwards for volunteering her services to highlight a different book each month.

The Measure by Nikki Erlick

In Nikki’s Erlick novel debut, she gives us this New York Times Bestseller about eight ordinary people with one extraordinary choice.

Imagine you wake up one morning and go about your business: coffee, newspaper, feed the dog, get ready for work … then you open your door to find a box. An interesting, unidentified box. Everyone over the age of 18 in the entire world received the same box. Do you open it? Do you throw it away? Do you put it in a drawer?
