When Community Shows Up, Recovery Grows

Recovery rarely happens in big, headline-making moments. More often it shows up quietly, in follow-up calls, in walking alongside a family after a hard day, in helping someone take the next right step when the path forward feels overwhelming. That steady, behind-the-scenes work is where recovery truly takes root.

Across the Upstate, we’re seeing more people come to the table; peers, families, first responders, healthcare partners, and local leaders, with a shared understanding that recovery is not a single service or system. It’s a relationship. It’s built through trust, dignity, and people showing up for one another, again and again.

December marked an important milestone with the state’s approval of a Family Peer Support Certification curriculum. This long-awaited step formally recognizes what families have always known: recovery affects the whole family, and families deserve support from people who understand that journey firsthand.

At FAVOR Upstate, this moment reflects years of quiet impact: listening, advocating, and building alongside our community. If this work speaks to you, we invite you to stand with us. Your support helps ensure recovery remains within reach, not just in moments of crisis, but every day.

With gratitude and hope for a year filled with resilience, connection, and continued recovery,

Volunteer Spotlight

Dyre loves FAVOR for a number of reasons.

His recovery began in 2017. Dyre Skeie was introduced to multiple pathways of recovery while in rehab. In 2018 he checked out FAVOR. In 2024 while at an in-patient facility he went all in to his recovery following a zoom facility outreach. The rest as they say is “history” for him in his journey to sobriety, which now spans 20 months.

The fact that FAVOR embraces multiple pathways of recovery, that is individually based, and you craft a program that works for you, and the blessing of having a coach to navigate it all. He says it provides him with “a well-balanced diet” of recovery. It has given him community, purpose, and is the foundation of his recovery. Dyre particularly enjoys the Zoom All Recovery meetings, as it is a safe space for everyone because “we all come with different needs and perspectives.” He is a big fan of the Dual Diagnosis meeting Fridays, as he lives with co-occurring disorders as well as Substance Use Disorder.

Dyre enjoys volunteering with the FAVOR Facility Outreach team as a facilitator and panel member sharing his story. “Service has been a game changer for me, specifically doing outreach. It allowed me to take back the power that addiction had over me and make a difference in people’s lives by being a light. The biggest way we can make a difference is to recover out loud – our struggles are universal – but there is hope!”

Volunteer Coordinator Roy Dessloch had this to say about Dyre. “He is a shining example of the impact of our Facility Outreach program. His presence in our community is a direct reflection of our mission. We carried the message, and he picked up the ball and ran with it in the most amazing way possible.” Thank you, Dyre, for your service, and living your best recovery life with us here at FAVOR Upstate!

Book of the Month

The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins

This book is not about addiction at all. It is about how to live life on your terms in the best way possible and how there is scientific proof of changing our way of thinking can be extremely powerful.

I will preface that I am not always a fan of self-help books as there are so many out there, with so many so-called experts. However, when Stephanie Gilstrap recommended it to the S.O.S group, I had to take notice.

What if the key to happiness, success, and love was as simple as two words? “Let Them.”

If you've ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or frustrated with where you are, the problem isn't you. The problem is the power you give to other people. Two simple words—Let Them—will set you free. Free from the exhausting cycle of trying to manage everything and everyone around you. The Let Them Theory puts the power to create a life you love back in your hands—and this book will show you exactly how to do it.

The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins is a self-help book that teaches readers to stop wasting energy on things they cannot control, like other people's opinions and actions, by using the simple phrase "Let Them" to free themselves from drama and judgment. It is a guide to reclaiming personal power, building resilience, and focusing on your own goals and happiness by accepting others as they are and setting boundaries. The book offers a step-by-step approach, incorporating relatable stories, research, and expert insights to help readers apply the theory in their careers, relationships, and personal lives.

Core concept

  • The problem: You give too much power to others' opinions, drama, and expectations, which keeps you from your own success and happiness.
  • The solution: Use the phrase "Let Them" as a mental tool to release the need to control others and instead focus on your own actions and responses.

What you will learn

  • How to stop comparing yourself to others.
  • How to break free from fear and self-doubt.
  • How to set boundaries to protect your peace.
  • How to build better habits and relationships.

How it works

  • Recognize: Notice when you are trying to control something outside of yourself.
  • Accept: Acknowledge that you cannot change other people's behavior.
  • Decide: Choose how you will respond and what you will do next.

Key features

  • A science-backed, no-nonsense approach.
  • Includes relatable stories, research, and expert advice.

Mel Robbins (melrobbins.com) also has a riveting podcast that is both science-based and motivational. It’s not just about the “feel-good”, she brings concrete backing to daily practices and how to live life and becoming the best version of yourself.
