As we continue serving as the Faces And Voices Of Recovery by recovering out loud, more individuals and families are finding support, and our communities are growing stronger. More people are learning about our no-cost services, and our Centers remain busy. AiR events show that recovery can be joyful and fun!
Still, many people do not yet know about FAVOR Upstate. We attend as many community events as possible, and if you know of an opportunity for us to host a table, please let us know. Together, we can share this message:
The road to recovery begins with compassion and community.
Our volunteer community continues to grow, and there is always room for more. If you would like to give your time, we would be grateful for your help. Thank you for supporting FAVOR Upstate!

Director of Programs and Interim CEO

Tyler Hudgins, aka “Hiker Trash,” will have been in recovery for nine years in October. He first heard about FAVOR after returning to his parents' home after hiking the Appalachian Trail and was told, “If you are going to live here in our house, at 37 years of age, you are going to meetings at FAVOR.” He managed to give up harder drugs, but alcohol was harder to let go of. He finally did during the summer of 2020.
What Tyler found at FAVOR from day one, and ever since, was a community that “meets you where you are and understands what you have gone through. I walked in a totally broken person who happened to walk 2,000 miles on the AT. I was welcomed unconditionally and encouraged strongly to get involved. Being of service, the wisdom and knowledge I gained, and learning how to be patient and practice persistence have all been invaluable to me.”

Joyful Anyway by Kate Bowler
In this month's book review, Beth Holladay-Edwards explores Joyful Anyway by Kate Bowler, a thoughtful and refreshing look at what it means to find joy in a world that is often unpredictable and imperfect. Rather than offering quick fixes or easy answers, Bowler challenges the notion that happiness is something we can achieve through effort alone. Beth shares insights from the book's powerful themes, including grief, longing, gratitude, hope, and the tension between life's struggles and its beauty. Through Bowler's humor, honesty, and wisdom, readers are invited to reconsider their own definition of joy and discover how it can be found even in difficult seasons. If you've ever wondered how to hold onto hope when life doesn't go according to plan, this review may inspire you to add Joyful Anyway to your reading list.

Participants from local recovery residences and community outreach efforts are learning their status through FAVOR Upstate's HIV and Hepatitis C testing program. Each month, FAVOR tests an average of 40 or more individuals, many of whom have never been tested before. Through testing, education, and referrals to treatment, we help prevent the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C, connect people to life-saving care, and empower individuals to take charge of their health. Together, we are saving lives and strengthening the health of our communities.

There was a time when seeing law enforcement meant fear, running, and feeling like there was no way out. Today, through ride-alongs in Clemson, SC, FAVOR Upstate Recovery Coach Shane Welch is walking alongside officers with a different purpose—connection, hope, and recovery. It’s powerful to see what can happen when recovery and community partners work together as one team to meet people where they are and remind them that recovery is possible.
