Building Stronger Communities Across the Upstate

This spring, we’re celebrating the growing number of Upstate communities choosing to make recovery from substance use disorder a shared priority. Both the City of Clemson and Fountain Inn have partnered with FAVOR Upstate to bring peer support directly into their frontline response. In these cities, first responders and peers work side by side to connect individuals and families to compassion, hope, and recovery support at the moment they need it most. These partnerships send a powerful message: recovery belongs in every community, and people deserve help when they’re struggling, not judgment.

As this work expands at the local level, we’re also contributing to a growing body of national research. FAVOR Upstate is participating in a NIDA-funded initiative led by addiction researchers at Harvard University. This project is designed to increase awareness of Recovery Community Organizations and strengthen direct referrals for individuals using MOUD to recovery supports in their own communities. With national attention on the importance of Recovery Community Organizations, we’re making it easier for people in the Upstate to learn about FAVOR and join this growing movement.

That’s why we’re excited to (re)launch FAVOR 101, an introductory training for anyone who wants to understand our mission, our services, and the many ways to participate. Whether someone has lived experience, is supporting a loved one, works in a community-serving role, or simply wants to be part of the solution, FAVOR 101 offers an accessible path into the life-saving services and values that guide our work. Together, these partnerships, collaborations, and learning opportunities reflect a powerful movement across the Upstate, one rooted in compassion, hope and recovery. Stay tuned for more information on when the training are offered. Thank you for believing in this mission and helping us build a future where individuals and families can find support before, during, and long after a moment of crisis. Your continued partnership allows us to provide everyone in the Upstate a fighting chance at recovery.

Volunteer Spotlight

John Bragg was in and out of residential treatment for his Substance Use Disorder for 20 years starting at the age of 21. While at a facility in Chesterfield County 9 months ago John first heard about FAVOR from his mother, who coincidentally is the aunt of Connor Baird (Recovery Coach at the Greenville Center). After hearing positive things about FAVOR, John took a chance and followed in his cousin’s footsteps moving to Greenville seeking yet another chance at a new life.

What John found when he walked into the Greenville Center was a sense of community and belonging that he had never experienced before. He quickly felt “very connected and gave him a place to go” that been lacking for so long. John is now a valued member of our volunteer cadre serving at the front desk, assisting with community outreach, and helping with AiR (Adventures in Recovery) events. John said: “when I get phone calls now, I can hear myself as an individual seeking help. I can also hear the pain my mom and siblings experienced from family members calling for assistance with their loved one. If you are looking for a way to expand your network and give back, volunteering for FAVOR is where it is at!”

Greenville Center Program Supervisor Nathan Keller had this to say about John: “John Bragg’s life is living proof that recovery is not just about what you leave behind — it’s about who you become. He has transformed pain into purpose, turning his own journey of healing into a bridge for others still finding their way. His recovery is more than sobriety; it’s leadership, humility, and daily service in action. John reminds us that when a person chooses transformation, they don’t just change their own life — they become hope in for an entire community.” We are grateful that John found FAVOR, and we all benefit from his light and service to us!

Book of the Month

Reflections on Recovery: A Review of Coming Clean by Beth Holladay-Edwards

Beth Holladay-Edwards shares a poignant and personal look at Liz Fraser’s memoir, Coming Clean. Moving from the "catastrophic vortex" of active addiction to the hope found in All-Recovery conversations and the support of FAVOR, Beth explores why "bad can exist next to good" and how we find the strength to walk through the dark tunnels together.
