Closing the Year with Gratitude and Grace

As we reach the end of the year I find myself reflecting on the countless lives touched by FAVOR Upstate, each one a reminder that recovery is real, resilience is powerful, and hope grows in the spaces where people feel seen and supported.

This has been a year of both tremendous impact and real challenges. Like many behavioral health and recovery organizations across South Carolina, we’ve navigated shifting funding landscapes, workforce strain, and increased community need. And yet what stands out to me most is not what we’ve lost, but what we’ve gained: deeper connection, stronger partnerships, and an unwavering commitment from people who believe in this mission as fiercely as we do.

I want to pause and say thank you. Thank you to every volunteer who showed up before work or after dinner to sit with someone in pain.

Thank you to every peer who walked back through our doors after rebuilding a life and said, “I want to give this gift to someone else.”

Thank you to our donors – longtime supporters and first-time givers – who helped us keep our services free, our doors open, and our values intact.

Thank you to FAVOR’s staff who embody compassion, integrity, and hope every single day.

This month, we’re highlighting a simple truth: gratitude is a practice, and community is built one small act at a time. Whether it’s celebrating a recovery milestone, offering a warm cup of coffee to someone who feels alone, or making a year-end gift that helps sustain this essential work, each action creates ripples of hope.

As we move toward a new year I am holding close the strength, courage, and humanity of the people who walk this road with us. Together, we will continue to give everyone in the Upstate a fighting chance at recovery, at stability, and at a life they are proud to live.

From all of us at FAVOR Upstate, thank you for being part of this community of hope. Wishing you a season of love, peace, warmth, and connection.

With sincere gratitude,

Volunteer Spotlight

Nina Williams was first introduced to FAVOR in 2016 at the recommendation of her family physician. After spending meaningful time in recovery—navigating both progress and setbacks—she has now maintained her sobriety for 19 months. Nina deeply values the resources FAVOR provides and cherishes the recovery community she has found there.

“FAVOR is my community,” Nina shared. “It’s an organization and a group of people who support me and my family. FAVOR has to be experienced to truly understand the impact it can have on your life.”

Nina enjoys giving back by volunteering with fund development and participating in facility outreach. She loves sharing her recovery story “because someone did it for me. Giving back to the community is important and helps break the stigma around Substance Use Disorder.” She often recalls a message she once heard in a speaker meeting, proudly embracing her role as a “link in the chain of recovery.” Additionally, Nina has maintained her CPSS certification since August of 2022 allowing her to serve as someone who would listen to a peer as well as share hope with them.

Volunteer Coordinator Roy Dessloch offered high praise for Nina: “She is one of the first to respond when we put out a call for help with facility outreach. Her story is relatable, poignant, and touches people in a unique way. Nina is an outreach stalwart and a superstar!” Thank you, Nina, for making FAVOR your community. We are fortunate you found us, and all of us benefit from the way you live out your recovery with FAVOR.

Book of the Month

Drunk-ish: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving Alcohol by Stephanie Wilder-Taylor

This “perfect balance of bold honesty and riotous wit” (Shelf Awareness) from the author of Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay explores Stefanie Wilder-Taylor’s journey to breaking up with alcohol for good.

For the author alcohol was the seasoning that could give almost any activity more flavor—from liquor cabinet concoctions in high school to tequila shots in her early stand-up comedy days to grocery store wine in young motherhood. A drink instantly took the edge off and made even the most difficult adversary (be it a tough crowd in a comedy club or a judgmental PTA mom) not just bearable but fun.

She was a mom who was lost in Motherhood. She started a blog entitled Baby on Bored,  that resonated with other mom’s and that eventually led to her first book, Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay. She appeared on the Today show and felt bolstered by her new, but humble success. However, she still felt disconnected and found herself continuing to turn to alcohol as a release/relief/comfort…you fill in the word.

As the years go by, Stefanie wonders if her relationship with alcohol is different from other people’s. Is everyone else struggling this hard to moderate? Is it even legal to watch The Bachelor without a glass of white wine?

Having spent a lifetime grappling with the question of whether or not she is a “real” alcoholic, one evening brings Stefanie close to the edge of losing it all. Miraculously unscathed, she decides she doesn’t need to dive all the way down to a stereotypical rock bottom before deciding to stop drinking; if sobriety will improve her life, that’s a good enough reason to quit. A tender and funny farewell letter to a beloved but toxic friend, Drunk-ish is a roller coaster of a book.

In addition to her book, she also has a podcast Drunk-ish: A Sobriety Podcast. Her November 18th podcast also featured Lisa Smith, Author of  Girl Walks Out of a Bar, which was recently reviewed. While she doesn’t find alcoholism nor sobriety “funny”, she brings humor to the subject that plagues so many of us and shines some light on the darkness of addiction.
