It is back to school season for many of you. That may mean shopping for school supplies or readjusting to morning traffic patterns. I have two children in college, and I miss the days of buying folders and markers. My school supply list now includes curtains, an unending number of pillows and sneakers that seem just a bit too pricey.
Graduation was a long time ago for me and while I do not miss tests and outlines, I still like learning. That is why I am excited about our upcoming FAWL leadership retreat. The leadership retreat was normally a time where chapter members from all over the state gathered and connected with one another. In fact, I stayed involved with FAWL at the state level because of the support I received at my first FAWL leadership retreat. I was the new kid on the block and nervous about meeting a room full of people who already knew each other. However, within a short time of meeting other chapter members, I had their cell phone numbers and promises to meet me at breakfast so I would not be alone. One member even requested the hotel room next to mine because she knew I did not know anyone. Now that’s what I call support.
We hoped that this meeting would be our first in-person event since March 2020, but with rising COVID-19 cases around the state, we made a difficult decision and changed our in-person meeting to a virtual seminar. We want this to be fun and educational, so we will encourage attendees to wear something from their alma mater (Go Gators! Go Hatters!). Our “syllabus” will cover areas ranging from chapter building, tax filings and Robert’s Rules of Order. We will have a CLE presentation from a wonderful speaker about how to “Zoom Like a Professional.” This is especially relevant since many chapters may be switching back to virtual meetings for their members. Finally, we’ll ask our attendees to help us “cheer” for our award winners at our Pep Rally.
I will miss the fact that we cannot see each other in person for our next meeting. While it may not be the way we planned, FAWL-U still gives us the chance to connect with one another. Hoping you can join us for FAWL-U this fall! Register HERE.
