Howdy FAWL! I am Iris A. Elijah and I serve as your state Membership Director. I am the Associate General Counsel of Florida International University. I previously served as the Young Lawyers Chair from 2016-2018 and the Public Relations Director from 2018 - 2019. I joined FAWL in 2013 through the Tallahassee Women Lawyers and served as the Breakfast & Books Chair and Young Lawyers Committee Chair. Currently, I am Miami-Dade FAWL's representative to the state Board of Directors and serve on the chapter's Foundation Committee.
As the Membership Director, I work to ensure FAWL is reaching every lawyer in the state and developing, personally and professionally, our current members. Executive Director Kevin Hudson and I help chapters with programming, membership recruitment, membership retention, dues processing, and programming. FAWL Leadership Retreat, October 2019
|

FAWL President Kyleen Hinkle hosted this year's Leadership Retreat in Cocoa Beach with Chapter Representatives and the FAWL Executive Team. Members discussed available resources for chapters, upcoming special projects, and health and wellness. Judicial Nominating Oversight Committee Chair Susan Warner provided JNC updates and training and John Stewart, President of The Florida Bar, provided a "State of the Bar" update. Joanne Grages Burnett provided an entertaining update on the lactation room successes - Sarasota FAWL was even recently featured in "
Mommy Magazine
" and Martin County FAWL received lot of
positive press
. Young Lawyers Director Sarah Hodges discussed positive sleeping and stress relieving strategies and Membership Director Iris Elijah provided suggestions for recruitment and retention. Many attendees shared goals, suggestions, and ideas for continued success and leadership development!

Palm Beach FAWL’s very own Alexcia Cox is being honored this month as the 2019 Justice Barbara Pariente Award recipient
and
she was named in the top 40 Under 40 Black Leaders in South Florida by
Legacy Magazine
. Alexcia is chief of the Domestic Violence Unit for the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office, 15th Judicial Circuit. Congratulations Alexcia!

On October 8, 2019, Chief Judge Rondolino of the Circuit Court of the Sixth Judicial Circuit in and for Pasco and Pinellas Counties, Florida appointed Jennifer Codding to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pinellas County Law Library. The purpose of the board is to provide advice to the Chief Judge as to strategic planning for and fiscal needs of the public law library.

Past FAWL President Edith Osman was selected to receive the University of Miami School of Law’s Henry Latimer Professionalism Award. This award recognizes a graduate of the law school who exemplifies ethical behavior, professionalism, humanity, service, and kindness to all. Edith was the second female president of The Florida Bar. In addition to FAWL, she also served as president of the Florida Supreme Court Historical Society, and the First Family Law Inns of Court. She holds leadership positions within the American Bar Association: State Delegate for Florida and member of the ABA Nominating Committee and House of Delegates Steering Committee.

Nellie L. King, a member of Palm Beach FAWL, was sworn in as Second Vice President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) at the Association’s annual meeting in Philadelphia, PA, on August 3
rd
. Nellie is the owner of The Law Offices of Nellie L. King, P.A. in West Palm Beach, FL, where she practices exclusively criminal defense work in state and federal courts.
