In 2020, my husband and two children sat around the table eating a smaller-than-normal turkey. It was also much quieter without my 18-20 other family members. I was thankful everyone I loved was healthy and safe, but I missed our normally busy and loud holiday gatherings. My Thanksgiving plans are once again unusual this year since the four of us will be travelling to California for short trip, but my sentiments remain the same – thankful for a healthy and safe family.

This is the time of year we all take a moment to think about what we are thankful for, and I want to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation for all our members. In these trying and turbulent times, you continued to attend meetings and tried to make the most of being a member of your chapter. Many of you did this all while juggling school closures, office relocations and health and family issues. While working as a chapter leader or simply as an engaged member, your hard work and dedication were instrumental to our organization.

I am also thankful for being able to work with dedicated board members and a fabulous executive director (love you, Kari!). It is an honor to work side-by-side with each of you. The FAWL board members volunteer their time to advance the interests of women lawyers, provide new opportunities for members and highlight the amazing achievements of our chapters.

As you sit down with your families for the holiday, pat yourself on the back for all your hard work this past year. This year was tough. Lawyering is hard enough without all the new challenges brought on by the pandemic. Twenty months ago, I had no idea what Zoom was, wore high heels to the office every day and had no need for a “light mirror,” but here I am ordering a large one from Amazon. It continues to be unprecedented times and I look forward to living in “precedented” ones soon (as one tweet I read mentioned). I hope you all enjoy a wonderful holiday with your family. Stay safe and healthy!

With gratitude,
