The importance of balancing work and pleasure.
As a father, I have stressed to my sons the importance of creating an appropriate balance of work and family time. Most of us need to work to support our families and fund our off-time, but it is also important to spend time with our families and to recharge our batteries.   By creating an infrastructure of qualified employees, a business owner not only benefits from the down time, but also increases the value and marketability of their business. (In fairness, I would have to admit that sometimes I preach better than I practice.)
This concept was recently reinforced during a meeting that I had with the owner of a successful, growing business and a potential acquirer. Both the acquirer and I were impressed by the fact that the owner of the selling company had recently returned from a three week island vacation in the Mediterranean and had not once checked in with his business via phone or email. Not only did this provide for a more relaxing time to the seller, but it demonstrated the quality of the staff of the business being acquired. By having a high functioning staff in place, my sell side client should ultimately obtain a greater value for his business and enjoy a shorter transition period upon change of ownership.
The Colorado business transfer market remains extremely active and Colorado enjoys the reputation for being an attractive location for operating a business. As an example, we are representing a manufacturer in Denver and have four proposals on the table from potential acquirers. All four prospects are from out of state. Two are strategic acquirers and two are private equity groups. Similar to the client company with the strong management team, this client is also well managed, debt free, and has solid financial controls in place.
