The Alaska Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates held their annual re-trainer, the Executive Development Conference December 6th -9th, 2022. The Anchorage Police Department again hosted the conference in their auditorium. This year set a new record for attendance with nearly 100 attendees from across the State, and beyond. Law Enforcement supervisors, commanders, and administrators made the trek into Anchorage to attend the conference that was coordinated by APD Captain Gerard Asselin, NA Session 276, Vice President of the South Central Region.
This year's Conference we not only had excellent presenters but were honored to have Governor Dunleavey, Mayor Dave Bronson, DPS Commissioner James Cockerell, NA Session 195, APD Chief Michael Kerle and ASAC Shawn Peters at the opening ceremonies to kick off the conference and welcome the attendees.

This year's instructors were an excellent group spanning a variety of instructional specialties Law Updates to Wellness to Leadership and financial planning for all. Instructors included: The Alaska Deputy Attorney General John Skidmore presenting an update on Alaska laws, Ret. Chief Danny Langloss presented on Protecting the Protectors: Building Resilience in Police Organizations, Dr. Benjamin Stone presented a much needed class on Heart Health and Wellness when Working in Public Safety, Lt. Jim Kalinowski provided insights and hints on ways of Balancing the Badge to Make a Difference, Jason Lehman provided a discussion on 21st Century Engagement: Embracing the New Norm Without Jeopardizing Safety, Skip Miller and Scott Hayes presented on the Oregon Accreditation Association, Paul Mellor was exceptional on providing examples and processes during the You Have a Right to Remember - Leading with a Better Memory, Capt. Tim Gately, NA Session 276, provided insight on Mindfulness and Police Leadership, Kristina Messenger and Pat Liss provided financial training on how to be secure in the future Beyond the Badge, and John Bostain tied it all together with his presentation on Culture by Design.
We were blessed with not only a great group of instructors but a group that brought their “A” games to the event and hit it out of the park.

Gerard Asselin, NA Session 276, retired on December 30th, 2022 after over 25 years of service with the Anchorage Police Department. Captain Asselin began his law enforcement career with APD in 1998. Since that time, he’s served as an officer and sergeant with the Patrol Division and a detective with the Crimes Against Children Unit. He’s also served with Warrants Unit, Special Assignment Unit-Drug Enforcement, Crisis Intervention Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, and Crime Scene Team. He’s worked as a field training officer and domestic violence instructor.
Before becoming captain, he served as a lieutenant with the Special Operations Unit. Gerard served as the Deputy Chief in 2021 before taking his current assignment as the Administrative Captain. Gerard has continued to expand his professional credentials, earning a graduate certificate in criminal justice education from the University of Virginia in 2019, attending the FBI National Academy, NA Session 276 and earning a Master of Science in Law Enforcement and Public Safety leadership from the University of San Diego in 2021.
Gerard is a lifelong Alaskan, a member of the Kenaitze Indian Tribe, and a Service High School graduate and is pursuing his master’s degree in law enforcement and public safety leadership. He is married to his high school sweetheart.

Director Heston Silbert, NA Session 226, retired from the Arizona Department of Public Safety earlier this month. Heston became the Director in 2020 after serving as a Deputy Director. Heston also had a 22-year career with the Phoenix Police Department and served as an Assistant Police Chief for the Mesa Police Department for 4 years. We wish him all the best with his next chapter. | |

Historian Gina Di Napoli, NA Session 225 attended a Law Enforcement Appreciation Event in Salinas, CA and the Guest Speaker was none other than a National Academy Graduate, Chief Roberto Filice, NA Session 255 who gave a wonderful speech, with a shout out to all our Law Enforcement officers for what they do everyday.
Chief Filice also gave a call to action for all the high-ranking officers in the room asking them to return to their departments to tell the officers they are appreciated and to thank them! Something each one of us need to be reminded of at times!

Congratulations go out to the new Ventura County Sheriff, James Fryhoff, NA Session 261. Sheriff Fryhoff was formerly the Chief of Thousand Oaks PD and Ojai PD before that. He started his career as a Cadet with the Pasadena Police before moving and joining the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. | |

Congratulations to Joseph B. Nunez, NA Session 224, who retired from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department after 41 years of dedicated service last October. His last command was with the Scientific Services Bureau. | |
Congratulations to Sheriff Tony Ray, NA Session 262, who retired from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Ray joined the department in 1991 and was the first Corrections Deputy to rise to the rank of Sheriff. Sheriff Ray will be staying in the San Diego area as he accepted a leadership role with ARJIS (Automated Regional Justice Information System). We wish him well in his new role. | |

Congratulations to the Clinton Police Department and Chief Vincent DeMaio, NA Session 260, as the Peace Island Institute awarded them the Community Law Enforcement Award and Recognition (CLEAR) for innovation in administration. | |
Congratulations to James Walsh, NA Session 281, who was promoted to Interim Chief of Police for the City of Norwalk Police Department. Chief Walsh joined the Norwalk Police Department in 1988, where he most recently served as Deputy Chief of Operation. | |
The CT Chapter wishes the best of luck to Chief Leon Krolikowski, NA Session 227, on his retirement from the New Canaan Police Department. Chief Krolikowski served the New Canaan community for thirty-three years, with the last ten as Chief. He will be starting his next chapter as the Director of Security for the Darien School System. | |
The Connecticut Chapter will be hosting the Regional Command College at the Mohegan Sun Resort from March 20th- 22nd, 2023. Training topics include executive leadership, crisis decision-making, and retirement planning. More information is available by emailing ctfbinaa@gmail.com. |

John Simmons, NA Session 215, has been selected to serve on the National Board as the next National Historian! John will be sworn in to the role at the annual conference in Denver this summer.
John retired from the US Army in 2000 as Provost Marshal at Ft. Leavenworth and was selected to serve as Chief of Police in Lansing, Kansas. He attended the Session 215 in 2003. In 2005, he was named Chief of Police in Fairway, Kansas. In 2011, John became the Chief of Police in Mission, Kansas. John retired from law enforcement in 2013 and was hired as the Director of Law Enforcement/Military Sales for CZ-USA in 2014. He fully retired in 2022 and continues to be very active with our Chapter!
John brings a wealth of experience to this position! The Kansas/Western Missouri Chapter is proud to have John serving on the National Board along with Scott Rhoad, the current First Vice President! Please join us in congratulating John for this prestigious appointment!

Creig Oster, NA Session 175, retired 30 December 2022 as the Undersheriff of Leake County. He served our profession for 39 years. Creig attended Session 175 in 1993.Thirty years later, his oldest son, Marcus, working with Madison Police Department in Mississippi, is in NA Session 285 and this time and graduates March 16, 2023! A second son, Nicholas, is a Detective with Gulfport Police Department in Mississippi! His youngest son, Patrick, is an Investigator with Jones County Sheriff's Office in Mississippi. | |

Nebraska Chapter and Sarpy County Sheriff's Office Retired Captain Chris Culler | Captain Chris Culler, NA Session 256, recently retired from the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office in Papillion, NE after 36 1/2 years of service. Culler worked his way through the ranks with stops in the Jail, Road Patrol, Administration, Narcotics and Criminal Investigations. He was also a long time member of Honor Guard and County SWAT team. Culler and his wife have since moved to warmer climates: Fort Walton Beach, Florida and has a spare room overlooking the water if anyone is in the area! | |
Nebraska Chapter and Bellevue Police Retired Assistance Chief Tom Dargy | Tom Dargy, NA Session 253, retired from the Bellevue Police Department in Nebraska as Assistant Chief with 26 and 3/4 years of outstanding service to the community. Tom has taken a new job as the Assistant County Administrator in Sarpy County. Tom worked throughout the BPD during his time and graduated from the National Academy with the 253rd Session in 2016. Tom plans to remain active with the NAA chapter in his "retirement". Good luck in your new endeavor. | |
At our annual meeting in December, SAC Joseph Bonavolonta of the Boston Office of the FBI swore in our 2023 Executive Board. Chief Tom Griffin of the Peabody, MA Police Department, NA Session 223, will be the Chapter President. SAC Bonavolontola also acknowledged the retirements of Chief Mike Lyle, NA Session 221, of the Melrose Police Department, Chief Joseph O'Connor, NA Session 241, of the Concord Police Department in Massachusetts, and Kevin Andrews, NA Session 259, of the Vermont DMV. | |

Chief Chuck Stone of the Norfolk Police Department in Massachusetts, NA Session 165, retired on September 10, 2022 after close to 30 years as Chief.
Chief Mike Lyle, NA Session 221, retired as the Chief of the Melrose Police Department in Massachusetts last November after 36 years with the department.

Roy E. McKinney, NA Session 207, retired after 46 years in law enforcement. He started his career working for the University of Maine-Orono and Hampden Police Departments before embarking on a 20-year service with the Bangor Police Department, the last several years serving as Lieutenant. He then was appointed by Maine’s Governor as Director of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency in 1997 serving as its Director for the next 25 years. Director McKinney retired the last day of 2022 to enjoy his family’s lake home, golf, and travel. | |

Chief William D. Baker, NA Session 129, a former Chief in Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire and long time Secretary Treasurer of the New England Chapter, retired after 45 years of service and has joined the National Football League as an Integrity Representative. | |

Congratulations to Chief David Kurz, NA Session 153, who recently retired from the Durham (NH) Police Department. Chief Kurz started his career in 1977 with the Gorham (ME) Police Department achieving the rank of Chief before moving to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency as Deputy Director where he left in 1996 to become Chief in Durham. Not content with retiring, Chief Kurz is now a Senior Consultant with Municipal Resources, Inc. conducting Chief searches and organizational studies for communities throughout New England. | |

Session 285 is fully underway and started on January 8th. Oregon representatives include Undersheriff Micah Smith with Linn County Sheriff's Office, Captain Cameron Ferguson with Newberg-Dundee Police Department, Sergeant Charlie Hall with Mt. Angel Police Department, and Chief Michael Iwai with Ontario Police Department!
Preparation for Session 286 in the spring is moving forward and the Oregon representatives will be Kevin Barton with Gresham Police Department, Chris Lindsey with Portland Police Bureau, and Bradley O’Neil with Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

We are saddened to hear the news of the passing of Phil McLean, Albany Police Department, NA Session 190, Richard Geistwhite, Oregon State Police, Session 178, and Les Stiles, Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, Session 128. | |
Our Spring Training event has been scheduled for Monday, March 6th in the Hall of Heroes at DPSST. The key presenter will be Paul Butler. If you have not seen Paul’s presentations before, he excels in the areas of motivation, leadership, customer service, ethics and attitude empowerment and he is extremely engaging. As in past years, the training will be offered at no charge and lunch is included. This training will be offered to all members of law enforcement and to other government officials. We will be sharing a training announcement in the very near future.
Mark your calendars for our annual “Pig Out” event that will be held on Thursday, August 10th in Wilsonville. More information will be shared closer to the event.
As mentioned last month, we are in the planning stages for the 2023 Fall Re-Trainer. The dates are September 19th-22nd, and will once again be held at Eagle Crest.
