A Message from Chief Rider

Welcome back Fort Bend ISD students, staff and families! I hope each of you enjoyed your summer and were able to spend time with family and friends.

As we begin the 2023-24 school year, I want to express how excited we are to see our students return to campus as we are their biggest supporters.

As you read through this newsletter, I hope you find this information helpful so you are prepared for the start of the school year. As always, the safety of our community is our top priority and we are here to serve and build positive relationships with our students, staff, and families.

On behalf of the FBISD Police Department, thank you for your support and partnership and I wish each of you a safe and successful school year.

Our Mission

To provide a safe environment in and around our schools and district facilities while serving as educators and building positive relationships with our students, staff, and families.

Back to School Safety Tips and Information

School Bus Safety Information from the Department of Public Safety (DPS):

  • According to Texas law, if a bus has alternating flashing red signals visible from the front or rear, drivers MUST stop before reaching the bus. Drivers can only proceed if the flashing lights are no longer activated, the driver signals you to proceed or the bus has resumed driving. Approaching drivers do NOT have to stop for a school bus that is operating a visual signal if the road is separated by a physical barrier or an intervening space. If a highway is only divided by a left-turn lane, it is not considered divided and drivers must stop for school buses.
  • Drivers who illegally pass a school bus face fines up to $1,250 for the first offense. For people convicted of the offense more than once, the law allows for the person’s driver license to be suspended for up to six months. A ticket for this offense cannot be dismissed through defensive driving. Criminal charges are possible if a driver causes someone serious bodily injury.
  • Always obey speed limits and traffic laws in school zones.
  • Remember, texting while driving is illegal in Texas.

Bicycle Safety Tips and Information

We encourage you to speak with your child about the importance of staying safe on their route to and from school. Simple reminders are often the most effective and these tips are applicable at any time of day. Please remind your child of the following:

  • Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle
  • Add a light or reflector on bicycles
  • Cyclists must obey motor vehicle laws including yielding to pedestrians, stopping for stop signs, signaling turns and traveling with the flow of traffic
  • Stop and look both ways before crossing an intersection
  • Always walk a bicycle across an intersection
  • Stay on the sidewalk rather than riding or walking in a public street whenever possible
  • Cross at a crosswalk or intersection as opposed to mid-block
  • Always look for moving vehicles

Crossing Guard Safety Tips

Our dedicated crossing guards are here to keep our community safe! Please follow their lead and commands when approaching and/or crossing an intersection.

  • Students must walk their bicycles across intersections.
  • Vehicles must remain at a stop until the crossing guard exits the roadway and the sign is lowered.
  • Reduce your speed and be aware of school zones.
  • Be aware of all pedestrians.
  • Don't forget to waive and say hello!

What is Standard Response Protocol (SRP)?

Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is based on the response to any given situation that requires an emergency response from an FBISD campus or district facility. SRP uses specific and intentional vocabulary. The premise is simple - these five specific actions can be performed during an incident. When communicating these, the action is labeled with a "Term of Art" and is then followed by a "Directive." All FBISD schools use the SRP and perform regularly scheduled drills with students and staff.
