Sermon Text: Luke 3:1-6
Sermon Title: "Prepare"
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah,
“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
    make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled,
    and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
and the crooked shall be made straight,
    and the rough ways made smooth;
6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”

Praise & Worship

Prelude: "Worship Melody"

Opening Hymn: "Hail To The Lord's Anointed" #140

1 Hail to the Lord's Anointed,
great David's greater Son!
Hail, in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free,
to take away transgressions,
and rule in equity.

2 He comes with justice speedy
to those who suffer wrong,
to help the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong,
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying,
are precious in his sight.

3 He shall come down like showers
upon the fruitful earth;
love, joy, and hope, like flowers,
spring in his path to birth.
Before him, on the mountains,
shall peace, the herald, go,
and righteousness, in fountains,
from hill to valley flow.

4 To him shall prayer unceasing
and daily vows ascend,
his kingdom still increasing,
a kingdom without end.
The tide of time shall never
his covenant remove.
His name shall stand for ever;
that name to us is Love.

Lighting of Advent Candle: "One Candle Lit" #128 (v.2)

Special Music: "How Great Thou Art"

Closing Hymn: "It Is Well With My Soul"#561

1 When peace like a river attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll,
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

[Refrain:]
It is well (It is well) with my soul (with my soul),
it is well, it is well with my soul.

2 Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control:
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and has shed his own blood for my soul. [Refrain]

3 My sin, oh,the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more,
praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! [Refrain]

4 May God haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend,
even so, it is well with my soul. [Refrain]

They're especially short on men's deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors & socks. Food items: canned meats, #10-size canned fruits/vegetables & applesauce.

Please sit your donations under the shelter, next to FCC's parking lot,
at the set of double doors with a mailbox.

Proverbs 31:8-9
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Christian Action Ministry

My Christian Friends! For the month of December, Crisis Control Ministry has selected SALTINE CRACKERS as the food of the month. Most often the Ministry chooses a food that we automatically think of as a staple food—one that we like to have in our kitchen cupboards. This month, they did exactly that! SALTINE CRACKERS go with so many things. Added to a bowl of soup or eaten along side, makes the soup go farther. If we spread Peanut Butter between two CRACKERS, we get a small sandwich. If we eat CRACKERS by themselves, we can enjoy a great snack. So you see, SALTINE CRACKERS are very much a good staple to have on hand. Pick up several boxes when you are out and about and bring them by the church for delivery to the Ministry.
Also, I thank all of you on behalf of the clients served and the Ministry itself for the many things you have brought to the church to be shared. You have given so much for so many during the year and this is truly appreciated. I wish I could tell you that our job is over, but it isn’t. The need for extra food for residents of Forsyth County is ongoing. I know First Christian Church will continue to respond in their most generous way.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

We have a wonderful opportunity to continue “Putting Faith Into Action,” by supporting our homeless community in downtown Winston Salem on December 5th immediately after our Sunday service. We will provide non-perishable food items and blankets, at The Dwelling Church which is located at 520 N.Spring St. 27101. Please wear your FCC Shirts!
With the coming of Advent and Christmas, we begin to think of Poinsettias. The Worship Ministry would like to decorate our sanctuary with these beautiful plants for this special time of year.We are giving you the opportunity to purchase these flowers in memory of a loved one or in honor of a friend or relative. The cost of each Poinsettia is $14.00. Please make checks payable to First Christian Church. Indicate on the check that the purpose is to purchase Poinsettia(s). They will be red Poinsettias and displayed in the Sanctuary Dec. 12th. Forms can be picked up from the welcome table in the lobby or by visiting our website www.disciplesofchrist.com. Once completed, please return the check and form to the church office or place it in the offering plate. Please turn in your order by deadline date December 6th.
Christmas Eve Service will premiere on our YouTube Channel at 5pm on Christmas Eve! If you would like to send a holiday greeting to the church, please send your video or written greeting to: [email protected], no later than December 17th!
Please find the prayer list below,
and remember to keep our church family in your prayers.

Philippians 4:6-7  “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
