Building Economic Justice!

Greetings and thank you to everyone who came out on Thursday for our celebration of entrepreneurs and small business owners. We voted in four new board members; please welcome Carey Baker, Rochelle Bellin, Michelle Laurie, and Tina Stevens! We were honored to hear from three small business owner innovators: Roseline Chiuwa of Africana Villa, Chelsea Beaudry of Sweet Babu's, and Hameed Bello of Agric Organics. And we were delighted to grow our community with some new faces—and deepen connections with those who have known us.

If you would like to learn more about our activities in FY23, please see our Impact Report. Our Audited Financials are also posted on our website. Here are some photos of the event.

Client Focus: Nostalgia Scratch Pastry

Cynthia Walton and Amanda Perreault were part of the team that in 2019 launched The Break Room, a restaurant located in the Greylock Works converted mill in North Adams. Professionally trained pastry chefs—and friends since high school—they worked together for years building a reputation for high-quality, delicious pastries. After four years at The Break Room creating a successful pastry program, they decided to start their own business.

Before opening, they faced challenges—their incomes were low and they had no collateral, plus Cynthia is a single mom—and couldn’t fathom owning a business while working full-time. Enter the FCCDC. After six months of working with Business Assistance Consultant Amy Shapiro, the two completed a business plan and the FCCDC provided a grant and loan for Nostalgia Scratch Pastry.

Cynthia and Amanda are now serving up exquisite baked goods to retailers up and down Berkshire County and recently were profiled by The Berkshire Eagle. “We’ve been side by side through every up and down,” Amanda told the paper, “supporting one another, pressing each other to be better at everything we do.” We predict that collaboration will continue to bring nothing but sweet success!

Emergency Farm Fund Deadline Extended

Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA) and the Franklin County CDC have extended the deadline to apply for the Emergency Farm Fund (EFF) to December 1. The fund offers zero-interest loans of up to $25,000 for Massachusetts farms in Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire counties affected by fluctuating winter temperatures in February, the deep freeze of May 18, and widespread flooding and excessive rain in July. Click here for more information.

The EFF is a resource for farms struggling to meet their immediate financial needs because of income, crop, or equipment loss due to these weather events. The goal of the fund is to respond to critical, time-sensitive needs by helping farms recover from their losses, continue farming, and/or build resilience for future extreme weather events. If you are a farmer who has experienced these losses, apply here.

The Franklin County CDC's PVGrows Investment Fund is one of the sources of funds for the EFF. The fund's investors are community members who invest as little as $500 toward a more resilient food system. Interested in becoming an investor? Find out more at the link below.
