| | This Month in Nursing History | First class of Army flight nurses graduate | | |
On February 18, 1943, the first class of Army flight nurses graduated from the U.S. Army Air Force School of Air Evacuations at Bowman Field in Louisville, Kentucky.
39 flight nurses graduated that day, but many had already been tested in the field. According to the Air Force Medical Service, "The need for flight nurses became critical after the Allied invasion of North Africa in November 1942, but the women at Bowman Field had not finished their training. Nevertheless, the USAAF sent these nurses to North Africa on Christmas Day."
