Supporting Student Growth: Helping our Students “Spring Forward” Together
As we enter the final months of the school year, it is an important time for schools and families to work together to support student success. While some families may participate in spring parent-teacher conferences, not everyone will have a formal conference this time of year. Even without a scheduled meeting, staying connected and engaged with your child’s progress at school is one of the most meaningful ways families can support learning and help students finish the year
strong.
A strong school–home partnership plays a powerful role in student achievement. When families and educators communicate regularly and work together, students feel supported, encouraged, and motivated to do their best. Checking in on your child’s progress this time of year allows families and teachers to celebrate accomplishments, identify areas where students may need additional support, and set goals for the remainder of the school year.
Ways Families Can Support Student Growth
-
Review grades and assignments regularly. Check returned work and teacher comments to understand your child’s strengths and areas for growth. Regularly login to your Parent Portal account to stay updated on academic progress and current grades.
- Connect with teachers. Reach out with questions about your child’s progress or if you would like additional feedback. Teachers value the opportunity to partner with families.
- Ask your child about their learning. Simple conversations about their school day, what they are proud of and what they have learned recently can provide insight into their learning and feelings about school.
- Encourage strong routines at home and school attendance. Regular attendance keeps students connected to learning and on track with lessons. Consistent routines for homework, reading, and rest help them stay focused, organized, and ready for success each day.
- Celebrate effort and progress. Remind students that learning is a journey and every step forward is something to celebrate. Taking time to recognize improvements in effort, learning, and confidence keeps students motivated through the end of the year.
- Stay engaged with school communication. Reading newsletters, emails, and updates from your school helps families stay informed about important dates, events, and learning opportunities.
The final stretch of the school year is a powerful time for continued learning and progress. By staying connected and encouraging student growth, families and schools can ensure that students feel supported, confident, and stay actively engaged in learning. Together, in partnership, families and schools have a valuable opportunity to work together to help students ‘spring forward” in their learning and finish the year strong.
Navigating School Transitions Together
Throughout a student’s educational journey, there are several important school-level transitions that mark new opportunities for growth and learning. Whether a child is moving from Pre-K to elementary school, elementary school to middle school, or middle school to high school, these moments represent exciting milestones. At the same time, transitions can bring a mix of emotions for both students and families, including excitement, uncertainty, and questions about what comes next. By working together, families and schools can help ensure these transitions are positive experiences that set students up for continued success.
Our school system is committed to building a safe, connected, and thriving community for all, and strong school and family partnerships are especially important during times of change. One of the best ways to support a smooth transition is to begin connecting with your child’s new school early and learning about the opportunities available for the upcoming year. Schools often host transition events, parent nights, and orientation sessions during the spring to help families become familiar with new expectations, programs, and support systems. Taking advantage of these opportunities can help students feel more comfortable and excited about the next step in their learning journey.
Tips for Key School Transitions
Pre-K to Elementary School
Starting elementary school is an exciting step as children begin building foundational academic and social skills.
- Attend kindergarten orientation or readiness events offered by your child’s future school.
- Schedule a registration appointment to ensure you have all items complete by the beginning of the year
- Begin practicing routines that support independence, such as following schedules, packing backpacks, and completing simple tasks on their own.
- Talk positively about school and the fun opportunities to learn and make new friends.
Elementary to Middle School
Middle school brings new experiences, greater independence, and opportunities to explore interests.
- Attend orientation events, school tours, or “rising 6th grade” nights to familiarize your child with their new environment.
- Help your child develop organization and time-management skills as they adjust to multiple teachers and classes.
- Talk with your child about new opportunities such as clubs, athletics, and extracurricular activities that can help them feel connected.
- Encourage your child to ask questions and advocate for themselves, helping them adjust to more independence and responsibility.
Middle to High School
High school opens the door to new academic pathways, leadership opportunities, and future planning.
- Attend information sessions to learn about course options, academic pathways, electives and graduation requirements.
- Encourage involvement in activities, athletics, or service opportunities to build connections and confidence.
- Discuss goal-setting for academics, personal growth, and college or career readiness, helping your child stay motivated and focused.
- Help your child identify electives or programs that align with their interests and potential career pathways.
School transitions are an important part of every student’s educational journey. With the support of caring educators and engaged families, students can approach each new step with confidence. Together, we can ensure every child feels supported, connected, and ready to thrive in the next stage of their educational journey
