ADVENT 2019 WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT DISCIPLESHIP STUDY
Light of the World: A Beginner's Guide to Advent by Amy-Jill Levine.  Classes will be led by Rev. Tom Ballard. In this book,  author, professor, and biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine explores the biblical texts surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus. Join her as she traces the Christmas narrative through the stories of Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary, the journey to Bethlehem, and the visit from the Magi. These stories open conversations around connections of the Gospel stories to the Old Testament, the role of women in first-century Jewish culture, the importance of Mary's visitation and the revolutionary implications of Mary's Magnificat, the census and the stable, and the star of Bethlehem and the flight to Egypt.  To purchase the book through the church office for $15, choose to add on book when registering for class.  The book is also available for purchase in paperback and eKindle versions at Cokesbury.com, AbingdonPress.com, and Amazon. This class will meet from 6:30-7:30 pm in Wesley Hall on Wednesday, November 20, Wednesday, December 4, Wednesday, December 11, and Wednesday, December 18.  Please note that class will not meet on Wednesday, November 27.

We invite you to JOURNEY with us  through the month of December
Sometimes it is easy to let the Christmas season make you bitter and maybe even a little like Scrooge. You know, the character  from the Charles Dickens book A Christmas Carol The season of Advent is a time to prepare for Christmas and the coming of the best gift ever given, Jesus! Let  us help you sing during this Christmas carol season with hope, love, peace, and joy instead of saying "Bah! Humbug!"  Join us in The Journey worship service  December 1, 8, 15, and 22 at 11am as we look at redeeming our Christmas Scrooge-like tendencies. Consider bringing a friend along on December 1 and they will receive a gift as we enter into the season of giving.

SERVE MEALS AT KARM
We are once again serving meals at KARM on the second and fourth Fridays of the month from September through May. Volunteers are needed from 4 - 6 p.m . Feel free to bring your teenagers! Youth are welcome to serve if they are at least 13 years old and accompanied by an adult. This is a wonderful opportunity to serve a meaningful ministry right here in Knoxville! We will need six volunteers for each Friday committed. If you are willing and able to serve, please contact Clarence Carter at (865) 356-0001.

KARM GIFT CARDS FOR THOSE IN NEED
Did you know that used clothing and household items can be dropped off at area KARM stores six days a week? When you deliver items, please give the name of our church to the attendants. FCUMC gets credit for all donations in our name that are then turned into gift cards. The gift cards are available in the church office when folks come in seeking assistance. Our staff distributes the cards, and recipients can then go shopping at any of the KARM stores for what they need!

OPEN DOOR COMMUNITY MEAL
On the fourth Saturday of every month, our church provides over 120 meals for some of our neighbors in need. The Open Door Community Meal is sponsored each month by Sunday School classes and/or individuals who prepare and serve the meal. The months of May, June, September, November, and December are available for permanent adoption of sponsorship. To volunteer to sponsor, cook, deliver meals, or drive, please contact Richard Bolus at (865) 776-4735.

ADULTS 50+ SERVICE PROJECT
Stuffed Animals & Toys for Judge Irwin's Court
This is one of our favorite service projects - collecting items for Judge Irwin's Family Court. Each child coming through his courtroom (through no fault of their own) may select an animal or toy to keep. In addition to stuffed animals of all colors and sizes, we are collecting toys for boys 12 and up who prefer action figures, Match Box cars, Hot Wheels, trucks, and airplanes. All items must be brand new!

We are grateful to everyone who has contributed thus far, and we will continue to take donations through December 5. The coordinator for this project is Carolyn Rogers and we are hoping to fill up Carolyn's bathtub with toys! To donate, please bring items to any of our 50+ events or drop them off at the church. We hope Judge Irwin will continue to have plenty of items to hand out as children come through his court. Questions? Contact the church office at (865) 689-5175 or email Carolyn Rogers

ALL IN FOR CHRIST SUNDAY - FOUNTAIN KIDS

Discuss stewardship with your child:   Stewardship is a big word that simply means the management of something important. Biblical stewardship involves us managing that which God has given to us. When we speak of stewardship, we are not only speaking of tithing (giving 1/10 of our money to God), we are also talking about our time. Stewardship of our money is very important. Leviticus 27:30 tells us that "A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD."

Discuss the word commitment with your child:  As parents, we strive to instill quality values in our children. One of those values is "commitment." It is important for children to learn that once they've given someone their word, they are expected to follow through. Parents can teach their child "commitment"  through examples and by giving them their own chances to follow through.
