Focus on next report for HHS Secretary & Congress
The federal Tick-Borne Disease Working Group (TBDWG) held their ninth meeting in D.C. on June 4, 2019 with a focus on developing the next report to be drafted for the HHS Secretary and Congress. The report will include an update on federal tick-borne disease activities and research findings.


The TBDWG is the official advisory committee established in 2016 by Congress in the 21st Century Cures Act authorizing the HHS Secretary to establish a group comprised of federal and public members with diverse backgrounds and opinions concerning tick-borne diseases.

To date, recommendations proposed by the TBDWG have outlined the need for increases in federal resources for urgent research and patient care needs, including enhanced surveillance, prevention, diagnostic and treatment options.

LDA President, Patricia V. Smith, was appointed for a second term as one of the public members of the TBDWG. As witnessed during the first meeting, Pat will continue to be a voice for patients and advocate for the growing number of those who are chronically ill from Lyme disease.

Smith testified before the  Committee on Rules  and introduced two amendments relating to Lyme and tick-borne diseases to the  Defense Authorization Bill  (National Defense Appropriations Act).
