FDA Import Alert Update: Certification Requirement

As FEMA previously informed you, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected Cesium-137 in Indonesian spice and seafood products the last few months. FDA has now issued Import Alert 99-52, notifying that effective October 31, 2025, import certification will be required for shrimp and spices from the Island of Java and Lampung Province on the Island of Sumatra in Indonesia. This action is based on risk of potential Cesium-137 contamination as multiple shipments from this region have been confirmed as containing Cesium-137.

This action represents the FDA’s first use of their import certification authority granted under section 801(q) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act through the Food Safety Modernization Act. Additional information on certification requirements and the scope of FDA’s authority is available on the agency’s new import certification page.

FEMA will continue to closely monitor and inform the membership of any updates. Please contact John Hallagan or Anthony Pavel with any questions regarding this topic.
