From the President

Dear Federation Friends,

Congratulations to Johnny Sarber and his Joint Law Firm Management Committee members Marc Harwell, Kile Turner, Frank Ramos, Lauren Curtis and Chris Steinmetz for a job well done. The program and speakers were excellent and the compliments were running high all during the conference. This intimate meeting of law firm leaders really allowed for time to drill down and discuss the practical and day-to-day problems of running a law firm. This was also a wonderful opportunity to work with our IADC colleagues on a meaningful joint project and we thank them for their cooperation and assistance.

The FDCC is fortunate to have announced two highly qualified candidates for Secretary-Treasurer, Elizabeth Lorell and Howard Merten. The Secretary-Treasurer and Board elections will take place this summer in Montreux pursuant to our By Laws and Resolutions. If you are going to be in Montreux I would ask you to take the time to meet with the Nominating Committee to share your thoughts on any of the candidates. If you are unable to attend the Summer Meeting this year please send me or FDCC Executive Director Kim LaBounty a letter or an email with your thoughts.

HAVE A SMOKIN' SUMMER IN MONTREUX!
We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline. . .
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky
Smoke on the water.
"Smoke on the Water", Deep Purple

Deep Purple wrote their smash hit song after witnessing the Montreux casino burn down during a Frank Zappa concert.  Although the song is about the fire, the alliteration to smoke is apropos to the FDCC 2017 Annual Meeting.  This is because the entire week will be smokin' with cutting edge CLE mixed with exploration mixed with the grandeur of the Swiss Alps.

Begin your Swiss adventure in Zurich on Monday July 24, 2017, where the FDCC will team with AIDA to present the "Bridging the Gap Insurance Summit".  The distinguished European faculty will address issues confronting insurers and their counsel when doing business across the pond called the Atlantic Ocean.

Following the Zurich insurance summit, we move to Montreux and the historic and internationally award winning Fairmont Le Montreux Palace. Once there, Todd Roberts will set the tone with an outstanding CLE and program lineup. Then prepare for a week of discovering natural beauty you must see to believe. Our activities will be varied so as to offer you a range of choices, from a cogwheel train to Rochers de Naye for a breathtaking mountain top view overlooking Lake Geneva, to taking a stroll along the floral lakeside promenade.

It's not uncommon to see a box of raisins on my desk - and I love the fact they have little sayings inside each box top. Today's reading was, "Leave a place cleaner than you found it." I thought, how fitting for such a spring day, and my general mission for the FDCC. Since starting as your Executive Director about seven months ago, I have been working with leadership and staff to make operations more efficient, more effective and more impactful. As part of that effort, one of the bigger projects we took on was your website. Over the past few months, we have been moving content and data to a new platform. Like so many spring-cleaning projects, the job has proven to be pretty substantial! But I think you will find that the platform will be more efficient for you and my goal is that much of the content will be easier to find, resulting in increased traffic to our site. Case in point, the section articles you are now linking to are searchable text on web pages, as opposed to .pdf docs. Each substantive law section now has its own page of relevant content! So when you are trying to find that article about toxic tort next year (for example), you can simply type in "toxic tort" in the search bar and anything with that text will show up, giving those articles a much longer shelf life. Check it out!

I'll be coming to you each month with something new about the website. It's my goal to have it be a valuable tool we can use to display the expertise of our elite membership!

Thanks for the opportunity,
Kimberly LaBounty
